In a move that underscores its aggressive positioning within the artificial intelligence sector, SoftBank Group has arranged a substantial $40 billion unsecured bridge loan. The financing facility, announced this past Friday, is set to mature in March 2027.
Strategic Ambition and Financial Backing
The primary objective behind this massive capital raise is a further, deep investment into OpenAI. A binding agreement with the AI research company, dated February 27, 2026, paves the way for this commitment. The transaction will be executed through SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2, which is slated to channel $30 billion of the total loan amount as a follow-on investment.
This capital infusion will elevate SoftBank’s total investment in the developer of ChatGPT to approximately $64.6 billion. Consequently, the Japanese technology investment conglomerate will hold a stake of around 13% in OpenAI.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank?
A consortium of leading global financial institutions is providing the $40 billion in credit. The lending group comprises JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and MUFG Bank.
Repayment Strategy and Corporate Flexibility
According to the company’s plan, the bridge loan will be repaid in stages before its maturity date in March 2027. SoftBank intends to use a combination of existing assets and additional financing initiatives to retire the debt. A portion of the borrowed funds is also allocated for general corporate purposes, granting the group enhanced financial maneuverability.
With a total deployment nearing $65 billion for a 13% ownership share, SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son is cementing his status as one of the most significant individual investors in the global AI race. The scale of this commitment is remarkable, with few comparable engagements in the industry.
