A guesthouse operator near Shepton Mallet has been ordered to pay more than £33,000 after inspectors found a non-functioning fire alarm system and defective fire doors at the premises.
Prestleigh Inn B&B Limited appeared at Taunton Magistrates Court on July 16, 2026, where it pleaded guilty to four offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The court imposed a £26,000 fine, a £2,000 victim surcharge, and £5,700 in legal costs.
The prosecution followed an investigation sparked by a guest complaint in spring 2025. Inspectors discovered the bed and breakfast had been operating with critical safety equipment failures that put guests at serious risk.
