German first aid training expands beyond workplace basics to include tactical medicine and mental health, driven by competitions and regulatory updates.

Competing on emergency response skills has become more than a morale booster for German rescue organisations. On 26 June 2026, teams from the Johanniter in Neuss dominated the Erste-Hilfe-Landeswettkampf (state first?aid competition) held in Siegburg. They won both the adult and children’s (ages 6–11) categories, securing their place at the national final — the Bundeswettbewerb — scheduled for 2027 in Hannover.

The competition is one indicator of a broader drive to raise quality across workplace and public first?aid training. Germany’s largest provider, M?A?U?S, has been operating since 1993 and now runs about 200 locations — including Berlin, Hamburg, Heidelberg and Nuremberg — training roughly 100,000 participants every year. Its standardised courses follow the DGUV framework, covering nine teaching units (7.5 hours) and are aimed at both driver’s licence applicants and company staff.

Yet sharpening first?aid skills is only one piece of the safety puzzle. Without thorough risk assessments, even well?trained teams can face serious legal exposure. A free Risk Assessment Toolkit gives you 41 ready?to?use templates and checklists to document hazards, from manual handling to lone working — helping you stay compliant and protect your workforce. Alongside the big players, specialised trainers fill niche needs. Susanne Sirch, based in Merching, offers individual, DGUV?compliant courses tailored to businesses, parents and children aged 6 to 12.

On the same day the Johanniter clinched their state titles, a very different kind of training took place in Aerzen. The Capsarius Akademie and Wero Medical GmbH ran a practice day focused on tactical emergency medicine. Police, fire?brigade and ambulance crews worked through realistic scenarios — explosion injuries, gunshot wounds and stab wounds — supplemented by a specialist exhibition. The event underscores how first?aid training is branching beyond the standard workplace module into high?risk, hands?on formats.

Workplace safety now extends into mental health as well. On 26 June, the chambers of industry and commerce (IHKs) and craft chambers from Magdeburg and Halle hosted an online workshop on psychological wellbeing in everyday vocational training. Experts coached participants on conversation techniques and available support services.

For smaller firms, the Berufsgenossenschaft Holz und Metall (BGHM) is offering a free introductory seminar in early July in SaarbrĂĽcken. The course targets companies with up to 50 employees; additional dates are planned through December 2026.

Updates to the DGUV regulatory framework are also in the pipeline. Frank Schüle of the Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik highlighted changes to rule 109?602 for the galvanising sector and information 209?009 on electroplating. Both define safety standards for wet chemical surface treatment and affect many industrial workplaces.

As German regulators tighten standards for chemical surface treatment, UK employers face parallel duties under COSHH regulations. A free COSHH Risk Assessment Toolkit provides 43 fully customisable templates, checklists and toolbox talks to help you assess and control hazardous substances — so you can stay compliant and avoid costly fines. Later this summer, Universitätsmedizin Göttingen is partnering with the city and district for an early?July symposium on the medical challenges posed by heroin and new psychoactive substances.

To lower children’s fear of medical procedures, aid organisations are using playful methods. In Vechta, mobile stuffed?animal clinics receive public funding. On 26 June, emergency services and the Malteser in Osthessen guided preschool children through mock medical exams on plush toys — a gentle introduction to emergency care that also builds community trust.
