Tesla is accelerating production at its Brandenburg plant in response to a dramatic jump in German registrations. The electric?vehicle maker recorded 5,111 new registrations in May 2026 – a 322% increase compared with the same month last year – giving it a 2.1% market share. To keep pace, the Grünheide factory plans to boost weekly output from its current level to 6,200 cars by July and then to 7,500 units by October, representing a roughly 20% rise.
That ramp?up requires a significant workforce expansion. Werkleiter André Thierig cited sustained demand for the Model Y as the reason for the move. Of the 1,000 short?term positions in vehicle assembly that Tesla is creating, 700 have already been filled. The company also intends to convert 500 temporary agency workers into permanent employees. The factory, which is permitted to build up to 500,000 vehicles annually, currently employs between 10,700 and 11,000 people.
The latest hiring is just one piece of a larger wave. Adding the 1,000 posts announced in April and the 1,500 roles earmarked for battery?cell production brings total new jobs at the site this year to 3,500. Once the current recruitment phase is complete, the permanent workforce will exceed 12,000. Including workers in other areas, the headcount could climb to 14,000 by autumn. Brandenburg’s minister?president, Dietmar Woidke, described the expansion as a “continuing success story”.
Alongside vehicle assembly, Tesla is ploughing more than 250 million U.S. dollars (roughly 220 million euros) into local battery?cell manufacturing. The aim is to achieve an annual capacity of 18 gigawatt?hours (GWh) at the GrĂĽnheide site.
The production increase directly mirrors the strong momentum in the German market. With the May registration surge, Tesla is strengthening its position in the European competitive landscape, using its sole factory on the continent to meet growing demand for the Model Y.
