Sennheiser Momentum 4 lands with a soft thud when you drop the earcups onto a wooden desk, the memory foam padding slowly regaining its shape around your fingers. On long-haul flights and noisy trains, these over-ear headphones are Sonova’s quiet comfort card in the consumer audio market.

Design, comfort and daily handling

At first glance the Momentum 4 looks understated, with smooth matte plastic and a fabric-covered headband instead of shiny metal accents. The design shift from the previous generation is deliberate, according to Sennheiser product manager Christian Ern, who has framed the new look as more discreet and travel friendly.

The earcups pivot and fold flat but no longer fold inwards, which makes the bundled hard case flatter in your backpack but slightly wider. When you grab the case by its fabric loop in a crowded airport, the low weight of around 293 grams keeps your shoulder from complaining even after a long walk.

Sound profile and ANC performance

Under the plastic shell, Sennheiser uses 42 mm dynamic drivers, the same driver size as in previous Momentum over-ear generations. Independent tests describe the default tuning as slightly warm, with a mild bass lift and smooth treble, which fits Sonova’s hearing-care heritage more than a piercing studio profile.

The Momentum 4 supports Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive, giving Android users a higher bitrate option and making it more flexible across phones and laptops. Active noise cancellation is adaptive, meaning the headphones continuously analyze ambient sound and adjust the ANC strength rather than just offering fixed low or high modes.

Battery life and travel focus

Battery life is the hard number that Sonova and Sennheiser push front and center. The company specifies up to 60 hours of playback with ANC enabled at moderate volume, measured under controlled conditions. Reviewers have reported real-world figures between roughly 45 and 55 hours depending on volume and codec.

Charging happens via USB-C on the right earcup. A 10-minute quick charge is rated for about four hours of playback, which matters if you realize at breakfast that your flight boards in half an hour and the battery LED is already glowing red.

Control scheme and Smart Control app

Sennheiser removes most physical buttons and leans on a touch surface on the right earcup for swipes and taps. Volume adjustments require vertical strokes while skipping tracks depends on horizontal swipes, which can feel slippery when your fingers are sweaty from summer heat.

One physical multi-function button still handles power and Bluetooth pairing, an important fallback when the touch surface fails in winter gloves. The headphones pair with Sennheiser’s Smart Control app, available on iOS and Android, which adds EQ, ANC strength, transparency mode and sound zone automation.

Smart features and hearing heritage

Sonova’s hearing-care experience quietly shows up in features like Sound Personalization, which measures user preferences through a listening test and tweaks the frequency response. In practice, this nudges the sound more than it radically reshapes it, but it bridges consumer audio and hearing comfort ideas.

The Momentum 4 also supports Sidetone for calls, letting you hear your own voice in the mix so you do not shout during video conferences. Four beamforming microphones handle voice pickup and noise suppression on calls, a configuration Sennheiser markets as suitable for both office work and commuting.

Market positioning and pricing

At launch, Sennheiser set the Momentum 4 price at 349.90 euro in Germany and 349.95 dollar in the US, placing it in the same premium ANC over-ear bracket as Bose QuietComfort models and Sony’s WH-1000XM line. Street prices have since softened on some retail platforms.

From Sonova’s perspective, the Momentum 4 is part of the Consumer Hearing segment it added after acquiring the Sennheiser consumer audio business in 2022. In recent annual reports, this segment is described as an important diversification to supplement the core hearing-instruments business.

Availability and color options

The Momentum 4 is widely available in Europe, North America and parts of Asia through Sennheiser’s own online store and major electronics retailers. Color options at launch included a black variant and a white model with light fabric headband, both shipping with a matching hard case.

In everyday use, the fabric top band tends to show dark marks from skin oils earlier than a pure leather design, which regular users in forums mention as a reason to reach for the black model. Replacement ear pads and cases are sold separately, reinforcing Sonova’s interest in keeping the product on ears for several years.
