The SurePave Permeable Paving Grid - CRH bets on quiet, stable surfaces

SurePave Permeable Paving Grid is the sort of product you only notice when you step off a gravel path and the stones stay pleasantly firm underfoot instead of sliding away from your shoes. The honeycomb panels lock the surface, but still let rainwater disappear quietly into the ground.

Plastic grid for heavy loads

SurePave is a modular plastic paving grid system sold by CRH’s Allied Concrete business in New Zealand for driveways, paths, parking areas and grass reinforcement. The panels measure 1 square metre, are 40 millimetres deep, and clip together with interlocking lugs to form larger areas. Made from 100% recycled polypropylene, the grid is designed to distribute loads across the surface while maintaining permeable voids for gravel or soil infill.

According to Allied Concrete’s technical data, a filled SurePave surface can support loads of up to 700 tonnes per square metre when properly installed on a compacted base course. The manufacturer positions the system as an alternative to concrete or asphalt for car parks and access roads where stormwater management and softer visual impact matter. Product manager Matt McGowan from Allied Concrete emphasizes that many councils increasingly accept permeable solutions like SurePave as part of low-impact development guidelines.

Stormwater, roots and regulations

Where a conventional concrete driveway sends rain to gutters and drains, a SurePave surface allows water to infiltrate through the gravel or grass-filled cells. That helps reduce peak flows into stormwater networks and limits puddles on the surface after a downpour. In tree-sensitive areas, landscape architects use the grid as a load-distribution layer over root zones so vehicles can pass without compacting the soil too heavily.

The manufacturer recommends a compacted sub-base of at least 100 millimetres of GAP20 or similar aggregate under the grid for light traffic, with thickness adjusted upward for heavier vehicles. On top, installers typically use 5 to 10 millimetres of fine gravel or sand bedding, then place the panels, clip them together and fill with decorative chip or soil. A vibratory plate compactor is often run across the surface to settle the infill tightly into the cells, which also reduces the crunching noise when cars roll over the driveway.

Installation, maintenance and use cases

Allied Concrete markets SurePave for residential driveways, commercial car parks, golf course cart paths, equestrian arenas and emergency access routes. In these use cases, the grid is often invisible once filled; users see only a level gravel or grass surface that stays in place more reliably than loose material on bare soil.

From a maintenance perspective, the grid aims to minimize rutting and potholes that typically develop on unbound gravel tracks. While occasional topping up of gravel may still be needed, the honeycomb cells limit lateral movement of the stones. For grass applications, regular mowing and periodic re-seeding remain necessary, but vehicles are less likely to churn muddy tracks during wet seasons.
