Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is pressing ahead with its most ambitious overseas expansion to date, winning approval for a $20 billion capital injection into its Arizona subsidiary just as unease over chip-sector valuations prompts a high-profile selloff. The world’s largest contract chipmaker secured the green light from Taiwan’s investment regulator on 3 July for what is already the sixth major U.S. outlay, bringing total authorised spending on American operations to $44 billion.

The funds will bankroll a new 12-inch wafer fab and an advanced packaging facility, reinforcing TSMC’s ability to serve the insatiable demand for artificial-intelligence accelerators. Clients such as Nvidia and Apple rely on the Taiwanese giant to manufacture their most sophisticated chips, and the Arizona complex is designed to shorten the supply chain for AI silicon. The move dovetails with a separate ten-year pact struck with Amkor Technology, under which the two companies will link TSMC’s wafer production directly with Amkor’s planned packaging site in the same state, creating a fully localised AI-chip supply chain. Mass production of 3?nanometer chips at TSMC’s second Arizona facility is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.

Yet the strategic news was overshadowed for much of this week by a sharp reversal in the stock. TSMC shares tumbled 6.9% on Wednesday and slid a further 2.1% on Thursday, briefly touching €429.50 before closing at €381.00. The catalyst was not company-specific but a broader technology rout triggered by several analysts warning that semiconductor stocks had entered bubble territory. Goldman Sachs added to the pressure by removing TSMC from its APAC Conviction List on 1 July — a day after the stock had hit a 52?week high of €420.50.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TSMC?

Despite the pullback, the longer-term picture remains formidable. The shares are still up 39.56% year?to?date and have gained 90.02% over twelve months. The current price sits 5.52% above the 50?day moving average of €361.07, and the relative strength index at 50.8 points to a neutral rather than overbought condition. Nomura Securities, for one, lifted its price target to 3,425 New Taiwan Dollars, citing an unbroken AI?infrastructure cycle.

The retreat has not deterred TSMC from guarding its most advanced nodes at home. Taiwan’s Economic Minister Kung Ming?hsin reiterated on Friday that the island will remain the core of the company’s manufacturing footprint, hosting 16 production and packaging facilities. The latest-generation 1.4?nanometer process — the so?called A14 node — is slated for volume production in 2028, giving TSMC a clear head start over Samsung and Intel, both of which do not expect to reach equivalent 1.4nm output until 2029.

Investors now turn to the second?quarter earnings report due in the second half of July. The set piece will likely feature management’s outlook on utilisation rates for the nascent 2?nanometer capacity and further packaging expansion for AI accelerators — data points that could either vindicate Goldman’s valuation caution or reaffirm TSMC’s claim to a dominant, and durable, position in the semiconductor food chain.
