UBS Accelerates Workforce Reductions in Integration Push
29.03.2026 - 00:28:26 | boerse-global.deUBS has initiated a new phase of its workforce reduction strategy, with notifications delivered to employees across all levels of the organization within a 48-hour window. Reports indicate the affected staff includes recent graduates as young as 22. The timing of these layoffs is strategic, coming directly after the distribution of bonuses for 2025.
Ambitious Cost-Cutting Targets Drive Restructuring
This move forms a critical component of a sweeping cost-reduction initiative. A central objective of integrating Credit Suisse is to achieve cumulative gross cost savings of $13.5 billion by the end of 2026. While merging IT systems is part of the plan, personnel expenses remain the primary lever for achieving these savings. Analyst projections suggest the bank's headcount, currently at approximately 103,000 full-time employees, could decline to between 85,000 and 90,000.
Market reaction to the news was muted. UBS shares recently declined around 2%, trading nearly 21% below their January 2026 52-week high. This subdued response suggests investors had already priced in the extensive restructuring course.

Upcoming Shareholder Meeting to Set New Direction
Despite internal disruption, analyst sentiment remains broadly constructive. Jefferies reaffirmed its rating on Friday, pointing to record revenues in certain business segments that are offsetting isolated profit declines. Experts are forecasting earnings per share of approximately $3.22 for 2026.
Attention now turns to the Annual General Meeting scheduled for April 15, 2026. Shareholders will vote on a proposed dividend of $1.10 per share and the election of new Board of Directors members. The nominated candidates are Agustín Carstens, former General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements, and Luca Maestri, the long-time Chief Financial Officer of Apple. These proposed appointments aim to bolster the board's expertise in regulatory and technological matters.
