Two major legal actions this week have underscored the growing liability for UK employers and property developers over falling objects and structural safety, with a ceramics firm fined heavily and a world-renowned architecture practice facing criminal trial.

Emma Bridgewater Ltd Fined £266,666 After Child Injured by Falling Glass

Emma Bridgewater Ltd was ordered to pay £266,666 on July 6, 2026, after a 12-year-old girl suffered a five-centimetre deep cut to her head during a public Christmas lights switch-on event in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.

The incident occurred on November 23, 2024, when a snow machine fell from a window and struck a light, causing a shard of glass to fall and hit the child. The company pleaded guilty at Birmingham Magistrates' Court to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Work at Height Regulations. In addition to the fine, the firm was ordered to pay £4,931 in costs and a £2,000 victim surcharge.

Foster + Partners on Trial Over Fatal Window Fall

In a separate case, the architecture firm Foster + Partners went on trial at Inner London Crown Court on July 7, 2026, over a fatal incident that killed 53-year-old Mick Ferris.

The 130-kilogram glass pane fell approximately 300 feet from The Corniche tower block in London on October 2, 2018. Prosecutors allege that the firm and three other charged entities ignored safety risks, noting that a previous window fall had occurred at the same building in August 2017. The trial is expected to continue as the court examines the firm's compliance with health and safety regulations.

Heightened Enforcement Across Construction and Manufacturing

These court cases come amid a broader period of increased scrutiny by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities over structural and workplace safety.

On June 24, 2026, developer Marcus Fielding and his firm, Michigan Construction, were found guilty of safety offences related to an unsafe six-storey apartment block in Kettering. The building, constructed in 2018, was deemed at risk of collapse. Sentencing is scheduled for August 21, 2026.

The HSE has also intensified its national oversight of the manufacturing sector. In July 2026, the regulator issued its first prohibition notices to four engineered stone fabrication businesses, requiring an immediate cessation of operations after inspections revealed a lack of mandatory dust control systems. The enforcement is part of a wider campaign involving more than 1,000 targeted inspections across the industry.
