UK Fire Crews Battle 19 Active Wildfires as Arson Charge Filed Over Moorland Blaze

Fire services across the United Kingdom are under severe strain as they tackle 19 active wildfires during a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures reaching 33°C. The crisis has already led to criminal proceedings in Greater Manchester, where a woman has appeared in court charged with arson following a major blaze at a popular reservoir.

Arson Charge Over Dovestone Reservoir Fire

Shania Care-Slede, 20, from Hyde, appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court on July 14 facing charges of aggravated arson, reckless endangerment, and dangerous driving in connection with the fire at Dovestone Reservoir. The court remanded her in custody, with a plea hearing scheduled for August 18 at Minshull Street Crown Court.

The fire began on July 11 and was declared a major incident two days later. Investigators believe a firework may have started the blaze. As of July 14, around 70 firefighters remained at the scene, supported by 11 fire engines and four specialist wildfire units. While officials described the fire as being in a steady state, road closures remained in place and local residents were advised about the risks of smoke inhalation.

Resources Stretched as Fires Burn Nationwide

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has warned that the volume of active fires is placing emergency services under intense pressure. NFCC chair Phil Garrigan said the situation was putting significant strain on firefighting resources across the country.

Among the most significant ongoing incidents:

• Tintwistle Moor: A fire burning since June 24 has consumed approximately 260 hectares of land.
• Glossop and Conwy: Major incidents were reported in both areas, though the fire in Conwy was brought under control by July 14.
• National picture: A total of 19 wildfires were active across the UK as of mid-July.

Heatwave Fuels Fire Risk as Bans Take Effect

The spike in wildfire activity coincides with the third seasonal heatwave, with temperatures reaching 33°C. Academics, including Claire Belcher from the University of Exeter, have linked the growing frequency and intensity of these "firewaves" to broader climate change patterns.

Authorities have introduced hosepipe bans in several regions to manage water supplies during the dry spell. Fire chiefs continue to urge the public to exercise extreme caution in rural and moorland areas, warning that dry conditions have left the landscape highly vulnerable to ignition. Investigations into the causes of several current fires remain ongoing as crews prioritise protecting life and property.
