A Newcastle man who carried out dangerous gas work at five homes across the North East while falsely advertising himself as Gas Safe registered has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
Alexander Robson, 38, of Fenham, pleaded guilty to ten breaches of gas safety regulations following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The case highlights the serious risks posed by unregistered tradespeople and serves as a warning to UK homeowners to always verify gas engineers' credentials before allowing work.
Fraudulent advertising on Facebook and flyers
Between June and September 2024, Robson operated under the business names GasnHeat Plumberz and North East Renocationz. He carried out gas installations at properties in Blyth, Ryton, Hexham, Winlaton and Newcastle.
To attract customers, Robson advertised on Facebook and distributed promotional flyers — both of which featured the official Gas Safe logo. However, he was not listed on the Gas Safe Register, the legally required scheme for anyone carrying out gas work in the UK.
Evidence presented in court included footage from a doorbell camera that captured Robson at one of the job sites. HSE inspectors found the work performed at the properties to be dangerous, posing significant risks to the occupants.
Eight-month sentence suspended for two years
At South Tyneside Magistrates Court on 14 July 2026, Robson was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment, suspended for two years. The court also ordered him to complete a six-month mental health treatment programme and 30 days of rehabilitation activities.
Robson was further ordered to pay £450 in compensation to his victims and £200 in prosecution costs.
The case is the latest in a series of prosecutions involving fraudulent trade practices in the North East. Safety campaigners continue to urge homeowners and landlords to check the Gas Safe Register before allowing any work on gas appliances — a simple step that can prevent life-threatening risks.
