The ongoing scrutiny of Iran's uranium stockpiles has brought renewed focus to a longstanding issue for U.S. energy policymakers: the nation's reliance on foreign sources of nuclear fuel. This vulnerability places domestic producers like Uranium Energy Corp (UEC) in a spotlight, as one of the few fully integrated uranium mining companies operating exclusively within the United States.

Market Dynamics and Price Exposure

As of late February, the uranium spot price was recorded at $86.95 per pound. This represented a decline from a two-year high of $94.28 reached the previous month. Uranium Energy employs a completely unhedged pricing strategy, meaning its financial performance is directly tied to these market fluctuations. The company states it controls the largest resource base and most extensive permitted production capacity in the U.S., with a licensed annual capacity of approximately twelve million pounds.

The equity's performance reflects this volatile environment. While shares currently trade roughly 35% below their 52-week high from January 2026, they have nearly tripled in value since the annual low recorded in April 2025.

Geopolitical Tensions Highlight Domestic Needs

Recent reports from the Wall Street Journal indicate the U.S. administration is considering a military operation to secure an estimated 450 kilograms of highly enriched uranium from Iran. No final decision has been made. Defense officials, including Secretary Pete Hegseth, have emphasized that the United States possesses "a broad spectrum of options," which could include a voluntary handover by Tehran.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Uranium Energy?

This situation underscores the fragility of the American nuclear fuel supply chain. Domestic uranium production fell sharply by 44% in the third quarter of 2025, to just 329,000 pounds. In response, the Department of Energy announced funding of $2.7 billion in January 2026 to expand domestic enrichment capabilities, including for HALEU—the fuel required for next-generation reactors.

Accelerated Expansion and Regulatory Progress

Uranium Energy is capitalizing on this supportive policy environment to accelerate its growth. In Wyoming, the company has received state approval for three additional header houses at the Christensen Ranch project's Wellfield 11. Four more are either under construction or awaiting approval. Meanwhile, in South Texas, the Burke Hollow mine is operationally ready. The final formal step before commencement is the pending permit from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

A significant regulatory milestone was achieved on March 18, 2026. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) assigned a docket number to UEC's subsidiary, United States Uranium Refining & Conversion Corp., for its planned conversion facility. Engineering and design work is underway in collaboration with Fluor Corporation, with site selection considering multiple states. The formal license application is expected to follow the completion of this preliminary work.

Uranium Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The company's path to full vertical integration—from extraction to conversion—remains dependent on permitting processes that operate on their own timelines.
