Verena Bentele has stepped down as chairwoman of VdK Bayern, the German social welfare association's largest state branch, effective 30 June 2026. The 44-year-old's resignation, announced after months of internal infighting, preempted a formal removal process that was already under way.

A committee of 90 members from the association's state committee had met on 19 June to discuss Bentele's possible dismissal. Eight of ten members of the Bavarian state board had lined up against her. Treasurer Konrad Gritschneder, 74, also resigned. The rift, simmering since summer 2025, centered on the future leadership and structure of the organisation, which counts roughly 850,000 members in Bavaria alone. All allegations against Bentele are now officially considered resolved, according to the association.

Bentele retains her role as national president of VdK Deutschland. Her continued presence on the federal stage comes at a critical moment for German social policy. On Tuesday, 22 June 2026, Germany's pension commission is due to present its final report — 30 recommendations that will land on the desks of Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Social Minister Bärbel Bas. Bentele is calling for a substantial strengthening of the statutory pension system, warning against any cuts or a further increase in the retirement age. She insists that a socially just retirement plan is needed to prevent old-age poverty.

At the same time, a controversial reform of Germany's basic income support scheme — Grundsicherung — is set to take effect in July 2026. New, stricter rules on protected assets will require recipients to draw down savings such as stocks and exchange-traded funds more quickly before qualifying for state support. The tax-free allowances are staggered by age: €10,000 for people aged 21 and over, rising to €15,000 for those 51 and older.

Bentele has warned that these tighter thresholds threaten the private retirement savings of many households. Other social welfare groups, including the SoVD, are also demanding a stable pension level and more concrete measures to combat poverty among the elderly.

Who will succeed Bentele as head of VdK Bayern has yet to be decided.
