The ground is literally being poured at Vulcan Energy's Lionheart geothermal project in Landau, but the company's share price is still trying to find its footing after a brutal stretch. Shares edged up 3.11 percent to €1.66 on Monday, clawing back some ground after touching a fresh 52-week low of €1.60 just last Friday.

The modest rebound comes as two pieces of news converge. Above-ground construction has officially begun at the Landau site, while the company has cleared the final hurdles to start drawing down its massive €2.2 billion financing package. A consortium of 13 lenders — including the European Investment Bank and several export credit agencies — is backing the debt portion, which totals roughly €1.185 billion.

Lionheart's Next Phase Takes Shape

Vulcan confirmed Monday that earthworks are complete at the 10-hectare Landau site, with foundation and concrete work now underway for the planned 30-megawatt geothermal power plant. Road infrastructure is also being built on the property, a prerequisite for the subsequent phase when process equipment will be delivered and buildings erected.

Lionheart remains the centerpiece of Vulcan's strategy. Once operational, the facility is designed to produce 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate annually, paired with electricity generation from geothermal sources. The company has also made progress at its Central Lithium Plant in Frankfurt's Industriepark Höchst, which converts lithium chloride into battery-grade lithium hydroxide.

Funding Unlocks as Strategic Investors Step In

The construction milestone doesn't exist in a vacuum. Vulcan recently confirmed it has satisfied the conditions for the first strategic drawdown from its financing package, with initial equity tranches from strategic partners already received. That cash injection is keeping the construction timeline on track and appears to be putting a floor under the stock after a punishing year.

State Street Corporation has also been quietly building its position. The U.S. asset manager now holds 3.01 percent of Vulcan's voting rights, representing roughly 14.4 million shares, up from 2.90 percent previously.

The Quarterly Report Looms Large

The real test, however, comes on July 30, when Vulcan releases its second-quarter report. Investors will be watching for three things: updates on the Central Lithium Plant's progress, the company's cash position following the financing activation, and confirmation that the 2028 production start remains achievable.

The report arrives at a moment when the stock is technically bruised but potentially oversold. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 33.7, a level that often precedes a consolidation or technical rebound. Yet the share price remains roughly 16 percent below its 50-day moving average of €1.98 and a staggering 59 percent below the 52-week high of €3.98 set in October 2025.

Vulcan Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Lithium Headwinds Weigh on the Sector

The disconnect between operational progress and share price performance isn't entirely Vulcan-specific. Volatile lithium carbonate prices and the long lead times inherent in geothermal-lithium projects have weighed on the entire sector. Since the start of the year, Vulcan's stock has shed about 35 percent of its value.

Whether Monday's bounce marks the beginning of a sustained recovery or just a pause in the downtrend will likely depend on the July 30 report. The market wants to see that management can keep Lionheart's ramp-up within budget and on schedule — a tall order for a project that will shape the company's trajectory for years to come.
