Western Digital's Two-Day Sell-Off Erases $19 Billion, Yet Its AI Storage Pipeline Remains Full Through 2028

Despite record order books and AI-driven demand, Western Digital stock plunges 40% from highs amid sector profit-taking and a $10B Chinese rival IPO. Revenue surges 45% but market discounts fundamentals.

Western Digital has become a study in contradictions. The storage maker’s order books are locked through 2028, its 2026 capacity is sold out, and cloud customers are securing multi-year contracts that extend to 2027 and beyond. Yet in just two trading days this week, the stock lost 10.8% on Thursday alone — wiping roughly $19.2 billion from its market capitalization — and now sits 40% below the all-time high of €696.30 it set only last month. At €416.70, the shares have surrendered all the gains built up since that June peak, though they remain up 608% over the trailing twelve months.

The sell-off was part of a broad de-risking across semiconductor and AI names. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slid 3.5% during the same period, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.92% and the S&P 500 eked out a 0.11% loss. Profit-taking after months of blistering gains was the immediate catalyst, but investors also grappled with a fresh competitive headwind: ChangXin Memory Technologies, a Chinese memory chip rival, filed for a Shanghai IPO with a planned raise of nearly $10 billion. For a sector already sensitive to supply-and-demand dynamics, the prospect of another deep-pocketed player entering the market amplified the caution.

Western Digital’s operational performance, however, tells a different story. In its fiscal third quarter, revenue surged 45% year-over-year to $3.34 billion and adjusted gross margin hit 50.5%. The company is guiding for current-quarter revenue of $3.65 billion, and analysts expect AI-driven demand for hard-disk capacity to grow at an annual clip of over 25% through the end of the decade. More than $5 trillion of the projected $7 trillion in global data-center spending by 2030 is earmarked specifically for AI infrastructure — a structural wave that should benefit Western Digital’s HDD business following the spin-off of its flash-memory unit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Western Digital?

Yet the stock’s behavior suggests the market is discounting these fundamentals in favor of cyclical fears. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 38.7, approaching oversold territory after the month’s 36.19% slide, while annualized 30-day volatility has ballooned to over 107%. The shares currently trade about 14.6% below their 50-day moving average of €487.86, a technical break that could take time to repair. Analyst consensus still points to a price target of €551.67, implying more than 32% upside from current levels — but that optimism hinges on the AI storage story overpowering the sector’s notorious boom-and-bust rhythms.

Complicating the picture is Western Digital’s market identity. Despite now being a pure-play hard-drive company, the stock was caught in the same downdraft as its memory-chip peers. In fact, it fared worse than rival Seagate Technology during the rout, underscoring the valuation risk tied to long-duration AI expectations. One strategist told Reuters that the chip rally is simply cooling, with AI demand present but uneven, even as infrastructure spending continues. That neatly captures the tension: a real structural shift on one side, and a market prone to violent re-pricing on the other.

The next key test arrives on August 5, 2026, when Western Digital reports fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results after the close, followed by an analyst call. By then, investors will have a clearer read on whether the recent correction was a healthy reset or the beginning of a deeper downturn in the memory and storage cycle. For now, those who hold the stock are betting that booked revenue and locked-in contracts — the kind of visibility most tech companies can only dream of — will eventually win the tug-of-war against short-term sentiment.
