Xiaomi's $2.2 Billion AI Bet Faces Skeptical Market
31.03.2026 - 04:06:05 | boerse-global.deThe Chinese technology giant Xiaomi has formally committed to a massive 16 billion yuan investment in artificial intelligence and research for the current year, a strategic pivot unveiled by CEO Lei Jun. This substantial capital allocation marks a decisive push into the next phase of technological evolution. Despite this aggressive expansion strategy, the company's shares continue to trade perilously close to their recent lows, indicating a disconnect between corporate ambition and market sentiment.
Operational Strength Provides a Solid Foundation
Amidst its software and AI drive, Xiaomi's core hardware business continues to deliver tangible results. The company's foray into the competitive electric vehicle sector shows early promise; deliveries for the new SU7 electric sedan reached up to 5,000 units in its first week. Following a price increase for a LiDAR-enhanced 2026 model version, the vehicle secured 15,000 firm orders shortly after launch. These developments are supported by a robust financial base, with the concluded 2025 fiscal year posting an adjusted record profit of 39.2 billion yuan.
This fundamental strength, however, is not reflected in the equity's performance. The stock closed at 3.51 euros, hovering just above the 52-week low recorded in early March. Year-to-date, the shares show a pronounced decline of approximately 40 percent. The market is evidently pricing the capital-intensive future investments with a degree of skepticism, demanding clearer near-term evidence of profitability from these new segments.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?
A Unified Ecosystem as the Strategic Vision
Management is channeling its new investments into several key areas: large-scale foundational AI models, robotics, and the deep integration of artificial intelligence into mobile devices. This capital offensive is complemented by a global recruitment initiative aimed at top-tier talent. The long-term corporate strategy is even more ambitious, envisioning a total investment of 200 billion yuan into core technologies over the coming five years.
The stated objective is the creation of a seamless, unified platform that converges Xiaomi's proprietary semiconductors, its HyperOS operating system, and its in-house AI models. This convergence represents the company's overarching technological goal.
For the 2026 calendar year, the automotive division is targeting an ambitious delivery goal of 550,000 vehicles. Should management successfully achieve these volume targets in the EV segment while simultaneously integrating new AI functionalities profitably into its existing ecosystem, the current share price may present a fundamental re-rating opportunity. Until such milestones are reached, the high capital commitment is likely to remain a constraining factor for the stock.
