A smartphone battery guaranteed to last five years is almost unheard of in an industry where most manufacturers cover just two. Xiaomi is betting that this promise, paired with a 9,000-mAh cell in the Redmi Note 17 Pro, will lure buyers focused on durability over trendiness. The new device launches in China on July 14, and if the battery capacity drops below 80% within four years, Xiaomi will replace it free of charge. In the fifth year, owners get an upgrade to a higher-capacity unit.

The product refresh comes at a critical time for the Chinese electronics giant. Shares have clawed back some ground recently, closing at €2.81 on Wednesday after a 9.53% recovery over seven sessions. That rally was sparked by the July 8 unveiling of the “Sky Nomad” series, Xiaomi’s first foray into range-extender electric vehicles. But the broader picture remains grim: the stock has tumbled 37.43% since the start of 2026 and 55.13% over the past twelve months. Its market capitalisation stands at €66.78 billion.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro brings more than a big battery. It features an OLED display with a peak brightness of 3,500 nits and an IP69K certification for dust and water resistance—specs rarely seen in its price bracket. Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s broader “Human x Car x Home” ecosystem is getting an upgrade with HyperOS 4, based on Android 17 and built on Rust and Flutter to cut RAM usage and boost speed. The software update is slated for July and August, part of a push to offset rising hardware costs.

On the automotive side, Sky Nomad marks a shift from the single-model SU7 strategy. The new full-size SUV, measuring over 5.3 metres long, targets a segment where margins are typically healthier. Production has already begun, and Xiaomi is reported to have pre-built more than 10,000 vehicles for the initial delivery wave, which is expected from mid-to-late August. Full technical details and pricing will follow at the end of July.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

June brought another milestone: Xiaomi EV delivered more than 30,000 vehicles for the third consecutive month, signalling improved manufacturing stability. Yet the division remains unprofitable at the operating level, posting a loss of roughly 3.1 billion renminbi in the first quarter of 2026. Its gross margin also slipped from 25.5% in the prior quarter to 20.1%, and the Chinese EREV market is fiercely competitive. Whether Sky Nomad can generate enough volume and margin to offset the drag is the key question for the months ahead.

The smartphone core faces its own pressures. Memory chip prices surged by up to 90% in the first half of the year, compressing margins. Huawei is clawing back domestic market share, and reports that co-founder Lin Bin may sell up to $2 billion worth of shares—though unconfirmed—cast a shadow over investor confidence. The battery guarantee on the Redmi Note 17 is one attempt to differentiate in a crowded field, but it cannot solve the cost squeeze overnight.

Technically, the stock has room to run. The relative strength index sits at 53.2 (or 52.0 according to some readings), a neutral zone that leaves scope for a further rebound. However, the share price remains 6.77% below its 50-day moving average of €3.01, and the broader downtrend is intact. The 200-day average at €3.90 is the next significant target on the upside, while the year low of €2.34 from June 26 provides a floor.

Xiaomi at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The immediate catalysts are clear: the Sky Nomad technical presentation later this month, followed by market launch in August, and the Redmi Note 17 reception on July 14. Strong pre-orders or convincing detail on margins could extend the rally. If not, the stock may oscillate between its yearly trough and the 50-day line until the next quarterly report clarifies whether auto growth can offset smartphone margin erosion.
