XRP's Breakout Faces Headwinds Amid Conflicting Indicators

XRP has delivered a significant technical signal this week by breaking above a multi-month downtrend line. This bullish chart development coincides with several fundamental updates from Ripple and its underlying network, painting a complex picture for the digital asset.
Corporate Moves and Network Resilience
At the corporate level, Ripple has announced a substantial $750 million stock buyback program, which values the company at approximately $50 billion. This marks an increase from its $40 billion valuation following a funding round in November 2025.
The integration of Ripple Prime into the DTCC's NSCC participant directory, effective March 2, 2026, represents a key strategic advancement. Ripple Prime, formerly known as Hidden Road and acquired for $1.25 billion in 2025, can now facilitate institutional post-trade volumes directly via the XRP Ledger.
On the development front, the protocol team moved swiftly to address a critical bug discovered in the newly activated "Batch" amendments, releasing version 3.1.1 in early March. The network's stability was maintained by deactivating the affected features. Concurrently, the ledger has introduced native DeFi lending and single-asset vaults, furthering its evolution toward institutional-grade financial infrastructure.
ETF Outflows and Macroeconomic Pressure
The technical breakout, which saw XRP surpass resistance near $1.39 on elevated trading volume, is noteworthy because it occurred despite conflicting capital flows. U.S.-based XRP ETFs experienced outflows of roughly $3.9 million in the same week.
These ETF products, launched in November 2025 and having gathered around $1.6 billion by January 2026, appear to be losing momentum. Assets under management have declined to approximately $1.06 billion. Furthermore, weekly inflows plummeted by 45% to just $1.9 million for the week ending March 1.
Macroeconomic factors are adding pressure. President Trump's nomination of Kevin Warsh as the future Fed Chair has dampened expectations for imminent interest rate cuts, as Warsh is viewed as a critic of quantitative easing policies.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
On-Chain Activity: A Dual Narrative
Network activity on the XRP Ledger is undeniably robust, processing over 2.7 million daily payments and hosting nearly 27,000 AMM pools. However, XRP's price remains about 62% below its late 2025 peak.
A significant portion of this on-chain growth is attributed to Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin and tokenized real-world assets, which primarily utilize XRP as a short-term bridging currency. While this boosts transaction metrics, it does not necessarily generate sustained demand for the XRP token itself. The presence of $461 million in tokenized assets and RLUSD's market cap of $1.58 billion—achieved less than a year after launch—highlights the platform's institutional potential nonetheless.
Sustaining the Momentum
Following the breakout, XRP's price consolidated just above the $1.40 level, forming a series of higher lows—a sign that buyers are attempting to solidify the former resistance zone as new support.
Whether this technical advance can be sustained hinges largely on two factors currently moving in the wrong direction: a revival of institutional ETF inflows and a more favorable macroeconomic backdrop. The path forward for XRP depends on these headwinds subsiding.
