Aixtron's Order Book Swells on AI Laser Demand, but Guidance Stays Put

Aixtron's preliminary Q3 orders of about EUR 275 million topped estimates, but the company kept its 2026 guidance unchanged ahead of its October 29 report.

Aixtron has given investors plenty to chew on ahead of its full third-quarter report on October 29 — a preliminary order intake that blew past both the prior-year figure and analyst expectations, fat margins, and a pair of institutional stake disclosures pointing in opposite directions. What it has not given them is a higher full-year forecast.

The Munich-based deposition equipment maker booked orders of roughly EUR 275 million in the third quarter of 2026, according to preliminary figures released about two weeks ago. That compares with EUR 124.0 million in the same period a year earlier and a consensus estimate of EUR 214.6 million. CEO Felix Grawert attributed the demand to systems used in laser applications for AI data-center communications — a specific end market rather than a broad-based uptick.

Revenue on a preliminary basis came in at around EUR 184 million, producing gross profit of roughly EUR 87 million and a gross margin of 48%. Operating profit reached about EUR 57 million, a 31% EBIT margin, which Aixtron said beat market expectations. Despite the outperformance, management left its 2026 guidance untouched.

Two Verdicts on the Same Numbers

Sell-side reactions split along that fault line. JPMorgan reaffirmed its "Overweight" rating and a EUR 54 price target roughly two weeks ago, as reported by dpa-AFX. Deutsche Bank Research kept its "Hold" rating and a EUR 44 target, though analyst Michael Kuhn flagged the order intake as significantly above estimates.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

The divergence underscores a simple point: strong bookings alone do not settle the valuation question. What matters just as much is how much weight investors assign to the operating result when judging where the business heads next.

For the full year, Aixtron continues to expect revenue of around EUR 560 million, with a range of ±EUR 30 million. It also stands by a gross margin of roughly 42% and an EBIT margin of between 17% and 20%. Those annual targets are a separate matter from the preliminary quarterly figures already on the table — and the company has not used the strong quarter as grounds to raise them.

Stakes Move in Opposite Directions

Meanwhile, voting-rights filings painted a mixed picture of institutional positioning. JPMorgan Chase & Co. cut its total holding in Aixtron from 5.55% to 4.94%, dropping below the 5% threshold on October 19. That is a stake disclosure, not a fresh analyst call, and should not be read as a target-price cut or a change in recommendation.

Norges Bank moved the other way. Its voting-rights share stood at 3.12%, while its position including financial instruments rose to 3.31% from 2.99% previously. The two filings therefore point in different directions and do not amount to a collective verdict from institutional investors. They describe shifts in individual positions; whether the company delivers operationally is decided by orders, revenue and profitability.

Aixtron at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The distinction between direct voting rights and a total position including instruments matters here, since the headline percentages can mislead at first glance.

October 29 Is the Next Yardstick

The full third-quarter statement, including results for the first nine months, is due on October 29. Investors will then be able to weigh demand, profitability and the unchanged annual guidance against one another. The preliminary figures provide a strong operating starting point — but no higher corporate target to go with it.
