Aixtron's Record Orders Arrive Prepaid as Analysts Split on What Comes Next
Published on 10/30/2026 at 03:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deAixtron's customers are not just placing orders — they are helping pay for the factory ramp behind them. The German chip-equipment maker disclosed that it booked EUR 110 million in customer advance payments during the third quarter of 2026, equal to 40% of the orders taken in the period. That inflow underpinned a free cash flow of EUR 289.9 million across the first nine months of the year, a figure management attributes largely to those prepayments.
The distinction matters for anyone reading the cash statement as a proxy for profit. Advance payments fund production capacity ahead of delivery; they are not earnings already banked. Aixtron said the build-out of its Penang site remains on schedule.
Orders double, and the mix tells its own story
Order intake in the quarter reached EUR 274.9 million, up 122% year on year and comfortably ahead of the EUR 210 million analyst consensus. Optoelectronics accounted for roughly 68% of equipment orders, with power electronics contributing about 24%. Total equipment order backlog stood at EUR 549.4 million.
The demand driver is concrete rather than thematic: laser systems used in optical data transmission for AI data centres. Aixtron also reported its first capacity-expansion orders and a growing project pipeline in GaN and SiC power electronics — early recovery signals, though not yet a completed upturn.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?
Two brokers, two readings of the same quarter
Metzler upgraded the stock from "Hold" to "Buy" on Wednesday, according to Reuters, with analyst Veysel Taze citing order momentum and expecting it to carry into the new year. Jefferies kept its "Buy" rating and EUR 44 price target; analyst Om Bakhda pointed to sustained order dynamics and the emerging recovery in silicon carbide and gallium nitride equipment. JPMorgan's Craig McDowell, meanwhile, stayed "Overweight" with a EUR 54 target, highlighting the composition of intake and upbeat comments on the forward order trend, while noting results matched the pre-released figures and confirmed guidance.
The shares rose 8.0% on the day.
Guidance holds, and that is the point
Third-quarter revenue came in at EUR 183.6 million with EBIT of EUR 56.7 million, a 31% margin. Over the first nine months, sales of EUR 358.1 million ran 3% below the prior-year level — a reminder that the latest quarter's strength sits against a softer stretch earlier in the year.
For the full year 2026, Aixtron reiterated revenue of EUR 560 million ± EUR 30 million, a gross margin of around 42% and an EBIT margin of 17% to 20%. No upgrade accompanied the order surge.
That leaves investors with a two-part thesis. AI-linked laser demand is already visible in the order book and now in the cash flow, with customers sharing the financing burden of the ramp. A broader recovery in power electronics could add a second leg. Neither the confirmed guidance nor the prepayment-driven cash flow converts those orders into delivered revenue yet — the gap between a full order book and realised earnings is where the story still has to prove itself.
