Allianz shares fell 2.7% to €450.10 on Wednesday, caught in a broad sell-off that swept European equities as weak leads from the US and Asia and mounting concerns over the pace of AI investment weighed on sentiment. The stock moved in lockstep with the wider insurance sector, which Reuters reported shed 2.6% on the day.

The global retreat, which Deutsche Welle reported spread from the US and Asia into Europe, centered on worries about heavy spending on artificial intelligence. Fears of possible restrictions on data centers following the US Democrats' election success added to the gloom. A separate reading of the day's trading put the decline at -2.9%, underscoring the pressure across the sector.

JPMorgan Flags Reinsurance Headwinds

Beneath the market-wide move, JPMorgan delivered a sector warning that rippled through insurance names. The bank downgraded Hannover RĂĽck and Munich Re and expects further double-digit price declines at the January 2027 contract renewals. The trend is already visible: natural catastrophe cover was roughly 12% cheaper at the January renewals, and by mid-year the decline had reached around 15%.

That backdrop puts earnings quality in the insurance business under the microscope. For Allianz investors, the key question is how profit and claims burden develop from here.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Metzler Takes the Other Side

Against the skeptical industry view, Metzler raised its price target on Allianz from €454 to €490 while reaffirming its buy rating. The upgrade to the target does not come with a change in recommendation — Metzler had already been positive on the stock. The brokerage also expects Allianz to lift its operating profit outlook to the upper half of its target range when it reports results.

The current full-year 2026 target stands at €17.4 billion, with a band of €1 billion either side. Third-quarter figures are due on November 12, 2026, with the release scheduled for 7 a.m. Any upgrade would signal a stronger operating trajectory — provided Allianz confirms Metzler's expectation. Until then, that optimism rests on the pending publication.

First-Half Growth Comes With a Caveat

Allianz brings a growing earnings base into the next report. Operating profit rose 8.6% in the first half of 2026, and adjusted net income reached €6.4 billion.

How that growth is valued hinges on claims development. Rising profits support the company as long as a higher claims burden does not erode the operating improvement. The combined ratio stood at 91.4% in the first half, and in the second quarter it came in less favorably than in the same period a year earlier. The further path of this metric is among the decisive checkpoints for investors.

Capital Strength as a Cushion

Beyond the operating business, the balance sheet offers another yardstick. The Solvency II ratio was 225% at the end of June, a sign of financial robustness if the group preserves it through less favorable conditions. The share buyback program covers up to €2.5 billion, of which around €1.4 billion had been executed in the first half.

Allianz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The picture therefore rests on a clear tension: a weaker industry environment counsels caution, while profit growth and capital strength argue in Allianz's favor. That positive case becomes more convincing if the group confirms the expected strength in its operating outlook and stabilizes the combined ratio.

Voting Rights Notice

Separately, Allianz published its total voting rights notice under Section 41 of the German Securities Trading Act (WpHG). The mandatory disclosure lists 374,170,936 voting rights. The company named Wednesday as the effective date of the other capital measure described in the notice.
