Allianz Stock Rebounds 2.4% as Buybacks, Robotaxi Deal and EU Tech Bet Redraw the Growth Map

Allianz shares climbed 2.4% to EUR 420.80 on Thursday, snapping a two-day slide that had pulled the stock down to a EUR 410.90 close a session earlier. The midweek retreat was triggered by turbulence in international capital markets, where a rapid run-up in US Treasury yields weighed heavily on Europe's financial and insurance sector. Investors fretted in particular over whether the shifting rate environment could saddle PIMCO, the group's asset management arm, with temporary writedowns on its fixed-income book.
The insurer's underlying earnings power, however, has kept the sell-off contained. Management is sticking to its predictable payout strategy, pairing regular shareholder distributions with a disciplined program of share repurchases. By permanently shrinking the number of tradeable shares, the buyback lifts earnings per share on paper without straining the company's solvency.
Buyback Engine Keeps Running
That reduction in free float is advancing steadily. The current repurchase program carries a total volume of up to EUR 2.5 billion, and between September 14 and 18 alone the company bought back 122,659 of its own shares on the open market, all slated for cancellation as planned. The steady stream of transactions gives the stock a reliable bid during volatile stretches, while signaling management's confidence in the balance sheet and its commitment to returning surplus capital to investors in an orderly fashion.
New Growth Fields Beyond Insurance
Europe's largest insurance group is also pushing into territory well outside its traditional business. On September 16, Allianz Partners announced a strategic collaboration with technology firm Waymo, focused on the European market and covering insurance solutions for autonomous vehicles. The agreement extends beyond coverage itself to include claims management and joint initiatives in safety research.

A day later came a second move: the Munich-based group joined the Scaleup Europe Fund alongside the European Commission. The vehicle channels capital into European growth companies operating in strategic future sectors, with a focus on artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology and quantum computing.
Analysts Split on Valuation
The strategic repositioning and operating performance have prompted fresh assessments from analysts. On September 18, DZ Bank raised its price target on the stock from EUR 486 to EUR 495 while reaffirming its "Buy" rating. Other houses, though, are urging caution, pointing to the valuation level the shares have already reached.
Allianz Trade Pushes Back on Commodity Report
The group also found itself in the headlines over its exposure to international commodity trading. The Financial Times reported that Allianz and Zurich Insurance Group had acted as insurers for transactions involving iron ore trader Radiant World. Allianz Trade, the group's credit insurance unit, moved quickly to reject that account, telling Reuters it has no material exposure in the matter.
Economic Research Flags Heat Drag
Separately from the market action, the insurer drew attention with macroeconomic estimates. According to the group's own experts, this summer's extreme heat waves inflicted noticeable damage on European economic output. Germany ranked among the hardest-hit countries, alongside Italy and France, due to heat-related production losses.

Where the Stock Stands
The shares are currently consolidating after a months-long advance. At the latest level, the stock sits 9.5% below its 52-week high of EUR 454.50. In pre-market trading, the stock had last changed hands at EUR 411.40.
Looking ahead, the direction of bond market yields and the insurer's operating metrics are likely to be the decisive factors for the stock, alongside the momentum from its buyback and its expanding bets on autonomous driving and European technology.
