Almonty: Buybacks, a Booked Vessel and the Fine Line Between Running and Selling
Published on 10/27/2026 at 13:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deAlmonty's news flow over the past fortnight reads less like a single story than a set of project stages at very different levels of completion. A mill hitting full throughput, a vessel pencilled in for a future sailing, a first cargo already dispatched, a buyback executed and a listing idea still on the drawing board — each sits at its own point on the path from plan to cash. Investors who blur those stages together will misread the company's actual position.
What the Plant Has Done, and What It Has Not
Diamond Equity Research, in a note published roughly a week ago, reported that the grinding circuit at Sangdong has reached full throughput, with the mill running about 16 hours a day in early October. That is a statement about equipment performance and operating hours — not about metal sold. Throughput describes what the plant can process; daily runtime describes how long it does so. Neither should be mistaken for a completed shipment.
The same analysis noted that the first vessel had been booked for 24 October 2026. A booking is transport preparation, not proof that cargo has sailed. Even after that date passes, the original statement remains, in substance, a reservation.
The Cargo That Has Actually Left
Against those forward-looking markers stands a completed operational fact: Sangdong's first commercial tungsten shipment has gone out. According to CEO Lewis Black, it was the first such delivery to leave the mine in more than 30 years. That confirms the start of shipping — it does not, by itself, settle every question about the pace of deliveries to come.

Two Brokerages, Two Lower Targets, One Unchanged Verdict
On the valuation side, Stifel's Brock Cannon cut his price target to US$21 from US$25 on 20 October, keeping his Buy rating. Per media reports, he tied the revision to altered assumptions about the timing of the first and second Sangdong expansion phases — a change that followed the investor day held roughly a week earlier. A lower target and a positive recommendation are not contradictory here; the call stayed constructive even as the schedule assumptions turned more cautious.
Oppenheimer had already moved on 15 October, trimming its target to $19 from $25 while retaining its outperform rating. Both actions point the same way — softer targets, intact recommendations. The explicit link to delivery timing, however, comes from Stifel and cannot simply be attributed to Oppenheimer.
Capital Returns and a Listing Idea
Separately, Diamond Equity Research reported buybacks of 2,914,739 shares for approximately US$48 million through the end of September. The figure documents capital deployed into the company's own stock; it says nothing about how quickly Sangdong metal reaches buyers, and the two should be assessed on separate ledgers.
Almonty at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Media reports a week ago also described talks with securities-industry participants about a possible additional Korean listing, with Korean depositary receipts among the options under consideration. The existing foreign listing would be retained. No listing plan has been confirmed by the company — talks about a possible listing are not a completed capital-markets transaction.
Reading the Sequence, Not the Headline
The stock gained 2.8% in today's session, with no confirmed specific trigger for the move; the prior day's advance was 4.6%. Neither figure resolves the underlying distinction that runs through the recent news. Plant performance achieved, transports prepared, shares repurchased and exchange plans merely considered must each be judged by their own stage of implementation. None substitutes for another — and the analyst targets, at Stifel explicitly including the timetable for further shipments, reflect expectations rather than results already banked.
