Almonty: Stifel Trims Its Target, D.A. Davidson Holds Firm, and Sangdong's First Cargo Still Has to Sail
Published on 10/22/2026 at 12:30 | Editorial boerse-global.deTwo broker notes landed on Almonty on Tuesday, and they point in opposite directions on valuation even as both keep a Buy rating on the stock. Stifel cut its price target to US$21 from US$25, with analyst Brock Cannon tying the reduction to revised timing assumptions for Sangdong deliveries following the company's investor day. D.A. Davidson, by contrast, reaffirmed both its Buy call and its US$33 target, saying its positive view survived the operational detail presented at the event.
That split is more instructive than the shared recommendation. A positive rating does not settle how robust the underlying schedule is — and the gap between US$21 and US$33 is where that question lives. Stifel described the investor day itself as free of groundbreaking news, which makes the target cut a calibration of expectations rather than a change of heart. Reading the downgrade as a wholesale retreat from Almonty would overshoot just as surely as reading the Buy rating as a guarantee.
Production, shipping and expansion are three separate tests
At Monday's investor day, Almonty described Sangdong as commercially operational and in ramp-up, while also unveiling a second-phase expansion intended to double capacity. Those are different categories of claim: one describes where the mine stands today, the other a project still ahead. Diamond Equity Research reported yesterday that the second phase is already under way and targeted for completion in 2027.
The distinction matters for how investors weigh the news. The ramp-up is the nearer-term proving ground; the expansion adds a longer horizon but cannot substitute for the existing operation delivering. Diamond Equity also reported that Sangdong has begun producing tungsten concentrate — an operational step forward, though not the same thing as material leaving the site. Concentrate produced and volumes shipped are not interchangeable.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?
On the shipping side, a vessel has been booked for the first cargo on October 24, 2026, roughly two weeks after the initial commercial tungsten shipment from Sangdong was announced. A booking is a planned transport step, not a completed delivery. It gives the market a dated checkpoint against which expectations for the coming sequence can be measured.
A softer price backdrop compounds the timing question
Tungsten pricing has moved against the story as well. Shanghai Metals Market reported a reference price for wolframite concentrate of RMB 302,000 per standard tonne as of October 15 — a decline of RMB 75,000 per standard tonne within the month. That is an industry-level development, not a company announcement, but it lands alongside the trimmed delivery assumptions to create two distinct drags on sentiment.
CEO Lewis Black had already flagged the trend in his newsletter on October 11, pointing to lower Western APT prices during the preceding week. What none of this establishes is a cause for the share price action. The stock showed a pre-market change of -3.6% today, with a -4.1% daily move also recorded; neither figure carries a confirmed company-specific trigger. A plausible explanation is not a proven link, and the Stifel note should not be treated as the identified cause of the decline.
The takeaway for investors is a hierarchy rather than a verdict. Operational status, actual shipments and expansion plans each deserve separate assessment — the first is a milestone reached, the second a test still pending, the third a future ambition. Almonty's progress warrants recognition without granting it credit for every step still to come. The booked cargo and the concentrate now being produced are real; whether they translate into delivered tonnes is the question the positive case still has to answer.
