Phillip Securities lifted Amazon to Buy from Accumulate on Monday and raised its price target to $330 from $320, pointing to visibility in AWS demand and the company's positioning in artificial intelligence, according to media reports. The stock climbed 2.5% on the day.

The upgrade lands in a busy stretch for the Seattle group. Over the past week Amazon has launched an AI program in Malaysia, unveiled a health-care partnership in London, announced a sustainability accelerator, trimmed staff in its devices unit and begun courting shoppers with a cut-price Thanksgiving menu. Each item tells a different part of the same story: a company pushing its AI tools into concrete, everyday use while carrying an outsized bill for the infrastructure behind them.

Malaysia puts tools in people's hands

Amazon Web Services launched its Semarak AI Malaysia program today. According to the company, it includes access to Amazon Quick for up to 445,000 government employees, alongside a GovHub pilot for 500 developers. The stated goal is 4,000 developers by 2028 — a build-out path rather than a headcount already in place.

What sets the initiative apart is that it pairs access to a tool with an offering for developers, rather than simply promising more infrastructure. A platform gains practical value when people can use it for specific tasks. Access on its own, though, is not the same as regular use, and no immediate revenue contribution can be inferred from the announcement.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

The same logic applies to yesterday's AWS tie-up with Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is set to run until 2030 and cover clinical care, operations, research and training. The breadth of that brief is more interesting to investors than another general AI pledge, but it remains a project with a defined target framework. Its announcement should not be confused with improvements already delivered or with financial results.

Also yesterday, Amazon announced its Sustainability Deep Tech Accelerator, which will examine climate and materials technologies for possible use across Amazon Devices, AWS and Amazon Private Brands. Here too the focus on specific applications is welcome — though a review is not the same as adopting a technology. Both initiatives mainly signal a direction: Amazon is hunting for applications inside and outside its own walls. Whether economically meaningful solutions emerge will have to be judged on execution.

The numbers behind the announcements

The financial backdrop explains why these advances do not settle the investment case on their own. On October 29, Amazon reported third-quarter 2026 net sales of $201.9 billion, up 12% year on year, with operating income of $28.1 billion.

AWS grew 39% to $46.0 billion in the same quarter, outpacing the group as a whole. That is a strong argument for the economic weight of the cloud unit, and it makes today's Malaysian initiative strategically coherent: Amazon is widening the use cases in a segment already expanding briskly.

The other side of the ledger is capital intensity. Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion for the trailing twelve months, which it attributed chiefly to AI investments. For 2026 it expected cash capital expenditures of roughly $220 billion. Growth and funding have to be weighed together, or the picture looks rosier than it is.

Devices cuts and a $25 turkey dinner

Reuters reported on October 28 that Amazon had cut about 250 jobs in its Devices and Services division, mainly in software development. The company said the changes were meant to enable more efficient operations and align the organization with its product planning.

Amazon at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

On the consumer front, Amazon said on Monday that Amazon Grocery would offer a Thanksgiving menu for $25, with free same-day delivery on qualifying orders of $25 or more. The company also said it plans to offer more Apple products worldwide ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Sentiment around technology stocks has been recovering. Media reports yesterday described rising Amazon shares as investors bought semiconductor names and higher-growth tech titles; Amazon was among the AI-linked stocks that advanced.

For all the activity, the strategic benefit of the new initiatives outweighs their near-term financial impact. They give Amazon's AI build-out a more concrete application focus. A convincing next step for investors would be less about wider access to AI and more about a visibly better balance between growth, investment and cash flow.
