Apple Enters Earnings Week With a Raised Target, a Downgrade, and Options Betting on a 4.3% Swing
Published on 10/29/2026 at 16:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deGoldman Sachs lifted its price target on Apple from $360 to $390 on Tuesday while reaffirming its buy rating — a change to the target only, not to the bank's view of the stock. The move lands just days before Apple reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on November 2, an event the options market is treating as unusually charged.
Options are pricing a move of roughly 4.3% around the print, according to an analysis by Saxo Bank published Tuesday based on options prices after the close. That is well above the roughly 2% average move Apple shares have logged the day after its last eight reports. Direction is anyone's guess: options prices reflect expected volatility, not a forecast of which way the stock will go.
A Split Wall Street
Loop Capital moved the other way on October 20, cutting Apple to hold from buy and trimming its target to $330 from $370. The firm pointed to softer expectations for iPhone shipments and rising memory costs.
The divergence sets up a quarter in which the headline numbers may matter less than what management says about supply. Apple has guided to revenue growth of 9–11% and a gross margin of 47–48% for the September quarter, with operating expenses of $19.1–19.4 billion. Memory-chip shortages and unfavorable currency effects were flagged by the company as headwinds, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, with demand for chips from AI infrastructure investment tightening supply further.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Apple?
What the Street Is Modeling
Zacks puts consensus revenue for the quarter at $112.95 billion with earnings of $1.98 per share — projections, not reported figures. Analysts expect solid growth in the core iPhone business, a decline in iPad revenue, and further expansion in services. The earnings estimate has drifted lower of late.
The December quarter is where the real uncertainty sits. Consensus revenue stands at $153.55 billion, but forecasts range from $131.5 billion to $170.4 billion — a spread that speaks to how differently analysts read the demand picture. The September quarter contains no sales of the foldable iPhone Duo, so its reception offers no read-across to the numbers at hand. Long delivery times for the device could weigh on revenue expectations, the FAZ reported, because demand and revenue booked in time are not the same thing.
Product and Legal Headlines
Apple confirmed Monday that a small number of iPhone Duo units suffer from a problem with the inner display, according to Reuters. Affected customers are being directed to AppleCare for a replacement; the company gave no details on the cause or the number of devices involved.
In Australia, the Federal Court has ordered Apple to allow competing app stores for local users from March 1, 2027, along with direct app downloads and alternative payment methods. Apple said it disagrees with numerous findings and will challenge the ruling. The requirements apply to Australian users.

Separately, Apple SVP Jennifer Newstead sold shares on October 20 under a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted on May 5.
Two Jobs for the Report
The November 2 release, due after the U.S. close, will also mark John Ternus's first quarterly appearance as chief executive, making his read on demand, supply, and margins part of the story. Apple must deliver the expected September-quarter growth and simultaneously shrink the uncertainty hanging over the holiday period. On the day, credible guidance on supply and profitability may count for more than a beat on earnings — and for options buyers, even calling the direction right can still mean a loss if the swing fails to cover the premium paid.
