ASML, Allocating

ASML Is Allocating 2029 Slots Rather Than Taking Every Order — and That Distinction Matters

ASML is allocating 2029-2030 EUV supply slots and raising prices, yet shares fell 6.5% on AI spending worries. Q3 net sales hit EUR 11.7B.

ASML Holding has spent the past week caught between two very different narratives. On one side sits a supplier so capacity-constrained that it is handing out delivery slots rather than simply booking orders. On the other sits a stock that fell 6.5% in a single session as the global technology selloff gathered pace and Reuters-reported worries about AI spending weighed on US equities.

Those two facts are not contradictory. They describe the same company from different angles — and the gap between them is where the investment case now lives.

Scarcity, Not Weakness

Reports dated 15 October indicate that ASML is allocating supply capacity for 2029 and 2030 through a slotting process, instead of accepting orders without restriction. The company has also confirmed price increases for EUV systems against the backdrop of tight supply. That is a very different signal from a customer base losing its appetite to buy. It describes a vendor whose available output is finite.

The same pricing power appears to extend to the spare-parts business. According to the 15 October reports, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have accepted higher ASML prices, while TSMC's position remained open. That caveat matters: there is no basis for reading the two Korean chipmakers' agreement as a blanket endorsement of higher terms across the entire customer base.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

The capacity picture was already clear a day earlier. On 14 October ASML said planned delivery capacity for 2027 and 2028 would fall short of customer demand, and that it was examining additional capacity increases for the latter year. Any such expansion remains under review, not decided. Reuters picked up the supply gap on 15 October and pointed at the same time to strong order intake. The operative question, then, is not whether customers want machines — it is how many ASML can physically get to them.

The Funding Question Sits on the Other Side of the Ledger

Where the doubt creeps in is further down the chain. Skepticism has built around the lofty expectations attached to 2028 and 2029, with investors questioning whether the large AI projects underpinning those forecasts can actually be financed and powered. Strong demand for lithography tools does not, by itself, answer that.

Elon Musk offered a vivid illustration of the ambition involved. The Tesla and SpaceX chief said on Tuesday that ASML and other equipment suppliers had accelerated deliveries for the Terafab project, which targets high-volume chip production in the third or fourth quarter of 2028. Musk himself called that timeline extremely ambitious — a useful reminder that faster shipments are not the same as a secured production start.

Hard Numbers Behind the Selloff

The operating backdrop hardly reads like a demand collapse. For the third quarter of 2026, ASML reported net sales of EUR 11.7 billion and net profit of EUR 5.0 billion. For the fourth quarter of 2026, the company guided to net sales of EUR 14.2–15.2 billion — a forecast, not yet realized revenue, but hardly the profile of a business losing traction.

ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

JPMorgan's Sandeep Deshpande trimmed his price target to $2,350 from $2,400 on 15 October, keeping his overweight rating intact. A lower target paired with a continued positive recommendation captures the tension neatly: the direction of travel is questioned, the destination is not abandoned.

What to Watch

Strip away the market noise and the setup is unusually clean. ASML is confirming price increases and rationing scarce EUV capacity through 2029 and 2030, while its order book stays full and its near-term guidance holds firm. What remains unresolved is whether customers can fund, build and energize the fabs those machines are destined for. Operational strength on one side of that intersection, execution risk on the other — and the stock price currently doing the arguing.
