The Hague has picked a fight with Washington over the future of Europe's most valuable technology company. In a sharp public intervention, Dutch trade minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma pushed back against US pressure to further restrict ASML's exports of older lithography systems to China, describing the situation as a "Greenland moment." His central gripe: Washington is happy to greenlight sales of advanced AI chips while simultaneously blocking the very machines used to manufacture them.

The market took note. ASML shares climbed 2.38 percent on Thursday to €1,495.60, extending a recovery that began last week when the stock added 4.18 percent. Even so, the equity remains 14.44 percent below its 52-week high of €1,748.00, set in late June — a gap that underscores just how much political noise has been layered on top of an otherwise stellar fundamental story.

A Dividend, a Dip, and a Debate Over Valuation

The recent trading pattern tells a more nuanced tale. On Wednesday, the stock slipped 1.32 percent to close at €1,460.80 — a move that coincided with the payout of ASML's latest dividend. Shareholders received $2.1507 per share on Wednesday, following the ex-dividend date of July 28, bringing the annual distribution to $8.60. The pullback leaves the shares 16.43 percent below their June 30 record, though the year-to-date gain of 58.52 percent remains formidable. The 50-day moving average of €1,540.63 now sits 5.18 percent above the current price, a technical signal that the short-term momentum has cooled.

That cooling, however, has done little to dent Wall Street's enthusiasm. JPMorgan has lifted its price target to $2,400, while DZ Bank upgraded the stock to "Strong Buy" in July. Citigroup, Susquehanna, and Berenberg have all reaffirmed their buy recommendations in recent weeks. The consensus sits at "Moderate Buy" with an average target of $1,970.33 — comfortably above current levels on the Nasdaq. The recent setback, in other words, looks more like a breather after a powerful rally than a fundamental repricing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

Not everyone is convinced. A Seeking Alpha analyst downgraded the stock to "Sell" on Monday, arguing that the current valuation leaves no room for error. The price, in this view, already embeds a "flawless AI supercycle" with zero allowance for a normalization in capital expenditure. It's a minority stance, but one that captures the tension between ASML's operational strength and the political and competitive risks piling up around it.

Raising the Bar, Then Raising It Again

The fundamentals are hard to argue with. In late July, ASML sharply raised its full-year 2026 revenue forecast to €43–45 billion, up from the previous €36–40 billion range, with gross margin expected between 54 and 56 percent. Management cited "insatiable" demand for AI infrastructure equipment as the primary driver. The second-quarter results had already hinted at the scale of the momentum: net revenue of €9.3 billion, net income of €2.9 billion, and a notable recovery in memory-chip orders alongside strong EUV system deliveries. Earnings per share came in at $8.65 on revenue of $10.64 billion.

CEO Christophe Fouquet has added a supply-side warning to the mix, noting that chip demand now outstrips available supply and that supply chains could come under strain. For a company that produces the most advanced machines in semiconductor manufacturing, that scarcity could reinforce pricing power across the industry — though it also raises the stakes for ASML's customers, who are already running at high utilization rates.

There are early signs that the new technology is finding its way into commercial production. Intel has successfully integrated ASML's High-NA EUV systems — priced at roughly $380 million per unit — into its "Panther Lake" chip architecture, marking the first commercial deployment of this machine generation anywhere in the world.

The China Conundrum Deepens

The political front is where the picture gets murkier. US lawmakers introduced the "MATCH Act" in April, a proposal that would force ASML to halt maintenance and service for already-installed DUV immersion systems at Chinese foundries including SMIC and Hua Hong. Separately, the US commerce secretary has alleged that an ASML EUV machine could be operating in China — a claim Fouquet has rejected outright.

ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Meanwhile, the competitive landscape is shifting, however slowly. Shanghai Aishengna Electronic Technology Group began series production of its own DUV immersion lithography systems in late July, targeting five units this year and twenty in 2025. SMIC, Hua Hong, and CXMT are named as potential customers. Analysts still estimate the technological gap to ASML at roughly 18 years, with domestic EUV capability not expected until 2030, and ASML retains a near-monopoly 98.7 percent share of the immersion segment. But the emergence of a domestic Chinese alternative marks the beginning of what could become a long-term competitive challenge.

The October Test

For investors, the immediate focus now shifts to October 14, when ASML reports third-quarter results and announces its interim dividend. That date will offer a first test of whether the raised annual guidance can hold up against the combined pressures of Washington's export policy and China's industrial ambitions. With annualized volatility near 54 percent, the stock remains susceptible to headline-driven swings — but the underlying demand for chipmaking equipment, and ASML's position at the center of it, continues to anchor the longer-term narrative.
