Two separate signals landed within days of each other this week, and neither came from ASML itself. One was a supplier relationship clarified by a competitor's chief executive. The other was a delivery timeline floated by a customer with a habit of making ambitious promises. For investors trying to read the Dutch equipment maker, both are worth parsing carefully — and both need to be kept apart from the numbers ASML has actually reported.

Start with the customer. Elon Musk has said that Tesla and SpaceX have brought forward deliveries from ASML and other equipment suppliers for their Terafab chip project, according to a Bloomberg report on 20 October. Musk is targeting high-volume chip production at the site in the third to fourth quarter of 2028 — a schedule he himself described as extremely ambitious. Accelerated tool deliveries would be one building block toward that goal, not a guarantee that production starts on time.

Whose Expectation Is It, Anyway?

The origin of that claim matters. The accelerated-delivery statements come from Musk, not from any announcement by ASML. Investors should therefore separate a customer's project target from a confirmed business expectation on the supplier's side. No additional revenue contribution for ASML can be quantified from Musk's remarks.

The longer-term demand picture stretches well beyond Terafab. Reuters reported roughly two weeks ago that customers were already seeking orders for later years, while ASML's planned capacity is not sufficient to fully meet demand. That leaves an ambitious customer-side buildout facing a limited supply of tools.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

Besi's Chief Draws a Line

On the technology front, BE Semiconductor Industries chief executive Richard Blickman said Thursday, according to Reuters, that Besi does not regard ASML as a competitor in hybrid bonding. Both companies are working to improve precision in chip placement, he said — a cooperative relationship rather than a new competitive front. ASML itself has not confirmed reports of a rival hybrid-bonding tool.

That distinction carries weight for valuation. Collaboration is not the same as a product offering. Nothing in Blickman's comments supports a confirmed market entry by ASML, nor a new competitive situation for Besi. The concrete anchor remains joint work on higher precision.

The Numbers That Actually Anchor the Story

For economic grounding, ASML's reported figures are a sturdier yardstick than unconfirmed product reports. On 14 October the company posted third-quarter 2026 net sales of €11.662 billion, with net profit of €4.960 billion and a gross margin of 57.5%.

Guidance for the closing quarter of 2026 points to revenue of between €14.2 billion and €15.2 billion. The raised full-year 2026 sales forecast stands at €44 billion to €45 billion, with ASML expecting a gross margin of around 56% for the year. Those remain projections, not achieved results — and Blickman's comments on collaboration give no reason to treat them otherwise.

Strong orders and long-term customer demand have eased concerns about fading momentum in AI investment, Reuters reported. Musk's Terafab remarks fit that demand picture. The separation still matters: an ambitious project plan signals need, while ASML's results and guidance make the company's own economic trajectory tangible.

Capital Returns Round Out the Picture

Alongside the figures, a completed capital measure. On 19 October ASML disclosed further repurchases under its ongoing buyback programme, acquiring a total of 233,872 shares for €352,032,719.

The buybacks document deployment of capital but answer nothing about the hybrid-bonding product question. Two layers therefore remain decisive for investors: ASML's confirmed business development, and the collaboration described by Besi. An additional competitor role for ASML is not among the confirmed developments so far.
