ASML's Order Book Is Full — It's the Funding Behind It That Has Investors Spooked

ASML fell 6.5% amid AI spending doubts, even as it flagged 2027-2028 supply shortfalls and JPMorgan trimmed its target while keeping overweight.

ASML Holding found itself caught in a sector-wide retreat on Tuesday, with its shares shedding 6.5% on the day as a fresh wave of anxiety over the cost and financing of the artificial-intelligence buildout swept through technology and semiconductor names. Nothing in the Dutch equipment maker's own disclosures drove the move. Instead, the slide tracked a broader reassessment of AI capital spending, sharpened by Meta Platforms' results and its planned equity issuance, which Reuters reported had deepened doubts about the scale of commitments behind the boom.

That distinction matters. A packed order book offers little protection against questions about whether customers can actually fund and execute their expansion plans — and the market is now pricing both the demand and its durability, not just the demand itself.

Supply Is the Binding Constraint, Not Orders

ASML said on October 14 that its planned delivery capacity for 2027 and 2028 will fall short of what customers want, and that it is weighing additional expansions beyond the buildout already announced — with the later year the focus of that review. No decision has been finalized. Reuters picked up the supply gap a day later, noting at the same time that order intake remains strong. The operative challenge, then, is not winning business but serving the business already on the books.

Two risks are colliding here. In the near term, ASML has to ship enough tools. Over the longer horizon, the question is whether demand survives the financing and infrastructure hurdles now coming into view — and it is the second worry that the latest selloff mostly reflects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

The Grid, the Balance Sheet, and the Clock

Concerns flagged by Reuters on October 15 extended beyond how AI infrastructure gets paid for. Constraints such as available electricity supply could weigh on the company, and investors are openly wondering whether ASML can scale capacity fast enough to meet the moment.

The operating picture itself remains solid. For the third quarter of 2026, ASML reported revenue of EUR 11.7 billion and a net profit of EUR 5.0 billion. Management guided fourth-quarter net revenue to a range of EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 15.2 billion — a forecast, not yet realized revenue.

Terafab Adds a Data Point, Not a Guarantee

A separate demand signal arrived midweek from Elon Musk, who said ASML and other equipment suppliers had accelerated deliveries for the Terafab project run by Tesla and SpaceX. The Tesla and SpaceX chief pointed to the third or fourth quarter of 2028 for the start of volume chip production in Texas — a timeline he described himself as highly ambitious. Announced projects bolster the demand outlook; they do not ensure on-time execution or permanently secured investment, and no assured revenue effect for ASML can be read into them.

ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

JPMorgan Trims Its Target, Keeps Its Rating

JPMorgan analyst Sandeep Deshpande lowered his price target to $2,350 from $2,400 on October 15, while reiterating an overweight recommendation. The revision pairs a slightly reduced target with a still-positive call — a useful reminder of how the pullback should be read. ASML is reporting delivery shortfalls against customer demand, while the equity market is fretting over the durability of the AI investment cycle. The gap between expansion plans and their feasibility is what is weighing on the stock right now.
