AST SpaceMobile's Upgrade Is Banked; the Service Is Still Borrowed Time
Published on 10/25/2026 at 16:32 | Editorial boerse-global.deScotiabank's decision to lift AST SpaceMobile to "Sector Outperform" from "Sector Perform" on Friday, with a price target raised to $55,70 from $50,80, sent the stock up 2,7% — and handed investors a tidy headline. What it did not hand them is a working, always-on satellite network. That gap between a broker's view and an operator's delivered service is where the real story sits.
The upgrade is a fair reason to pay closer attention. It is not proof of execution. An analyst rating prices expectations; the operational test is AST's alone to pass, and the company's own language remains carefully hedged.
A target date, not a guarantee
On Tuesday the company restated its goal of an initial, intermittent mobile broadband service before the end of 2026, covering the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. The geographic and timing frame is concrete. The word "intermittent" carries the weight: anyone reading the announcement as a fully available offering has gone beyond what AST actually said. A first operating phase is visible on the horizon — a full success story is not.
Ground infrastructure tells a similar story of breadth without completion. AST reported more than 60 gateways worldwide that are deployed, installed or still in planning. Bundling those stages into one figure shows the scale of activity but blurs readiness. Planning documents preparation; installation marks a different step. The aggregate does not answer how far the prerequisites for the promised service have actually been met.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AST SpaceMobile?
Where the numbers get sharper, so does the distinction between done and hoped-for. In the United States, more than 3.000 service cells were switched on, per the company, with roughly 5.600 expected by year-end. The second figure is a forecast, not an achieved build-out. Splitting delivered milestones from announced targets is more useful to investors than any single large total.
Partners sign letters, not licenses
Europe offers optionality rather than resolution. AST on Monday welcomed a letter of intent from Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone to examine a possible joint bid for spectrum for mobile satellite services. Such cooperation could strengthen the European case, but the bid remains exploratory and subject to approval. Neither an awarded spectrum block nor a secured additional service can be inferred from it.
Brazil makes the same point on commercial terms. Friday's agreement with Brisanet, Unifique and iez! Telecom envisages satellite broadband direct to devices across the country, using the carriers' spectrum in the 700 MHz band, with the operators funding the links to AST's gateways. Final contract terms are still being negotiated, and the project requires regulatory approvals and licenses. According to media reports, the existing satellite constellation does not yet allow uninterrupted service in Brazil.
Reach, in other words, is not the same as round-the-clock coverage. The network spans more than 60 mobile operators with a combined subscriber base above 3 billion — a statement about infrastructure and partner scale, not about customers already served or a continuously available connection. The differing build stages of the gateways matter just as much.
What would actually move the needle
My read stays cautiously constructive. AST has named concrete preparatory steps and a checkable target horizon, which argues for genuine operational progress. The upgrade partly front-runs that hope without replacing its confirmation. For a stronger verdict, plans need to become installations, build-out targets need to become reached milestones, and announced coverage needs to become delivered service.
The next scheduled checkpoint is the third-quarter 2026 results date of 9 November 2026 — an occasion to weigh commercial development alongside the friendlier analyst view. Until then, the scoreboard reads pending.
