AXT's Indium Phosphide Bet: A $100 Million Backlog Meets a Market That Won't Look Up

AXT's Q2 revenue hit $47.6M, beating estimates, with record InP sales and a $100M backlog, yet shares fell 7.8% amid China concerns.

The disconnect is hard to ignore. AXT is sitting on its strongest operational metrics in years — record indium phosphide revenue, a backlog stretching past $100 million, and a customer so confident it has prepaid tens of millions of dollars for wafer capacity through 2031. And yet the share price keeps sliding, down 7.8% in a single session to €48.10, with a 14% weekly loss and a 19% monthly decline trailing behind it.

The Lumentum Deal That Changes the Math

The centerpiece of AXT's bull case is the capacity reservation agreement signed with Lumentum Operations in late July. The deal locks in indium phosphide wafer substrate capacity through the end of 2031, backed by two advance payments of $43.5 million each from Lumentum. Those prepayments function as credits against future purchases — a structure that signals far more commitment than a standard supply agreement.

That kind of financial lock-in makes sense when you look at the numbers behind it. AXT's second quarter delivered revenue of $47.6 million, blowing past the $34 million consensus. Indium phosphide alone contributed $30.7 million of that total — a record and nearly two-thirds of overall sales. The non-GAAP gross margin story is even more striking: it vaulted from a thin 8.2% in the year-ago quarter to 45%.

The order book reinforces the momentum. Supply contracts from Q2 2026 exceed $100 million and extend into 2027 across customer agreements with Casela, Coherent, and Lumentum. Management has held firm on its Q3 2026 guidance of roughly $66 million in revenue and earnings per share between $0.30 and $0.32.

Why the Market Remains Unimpressed

The puzzle is why these fundamentals haven't translated into share price support. Wedbush flagged potential China-related delays as a central overhang back in mid-August, and that concern has colored the selling pressure since — even on trading days with no fresh company-specific catalyst.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AXT?

Recent weeks have also brought a familiar mix of volatility triggers: insider sales, leveraged ETF exposure in the stock, and erratic price reactions. Director Leonard J. Leblanc recently sold 4,000 shares, a modest amount relative to the insider selling that preceded it. The cumulative effect has tested investor patience despite the operational strength.

There's also a structural argument for caution. Indium phosphide has become the dominant revenue driver, positioning AXT squarely in the fiber optic and data center component demand chain. That market isn't disappearing overnight — but the stock's behavior suggests investors are treating the Lumentum agreement as just another headline in a nervous tape rather than the stability anchor it represents.

Technicals Tell a Nuanced Story

The chart offers a mixed read. AXT currently trades 13% below its 50-day moving average, yet sits only 2.1% beneath its 200-day average — suggesting the longer-term trend remains intact even as short-term momentum has deteriorated. The RSI at 41.4 points to neither overbought nor deeply oversold conditions.

Meanwhile, institutional interest tells a different story than the price action. BlackRock disclosed a new position acquired during Q2 2026 of roughly 5 million shares valued at about $365.6 million, representing a 7.75% stake in the company.

A Side Story With Strategic Weight

On the corporate structure front, subsidiary Beijing Tongmei Xtal Technology has withdrawn its IPO application from Shanghai's STAR Market and is now pivoting toward a Hong Kong listing — a process the company estimates will take roughly a year. It's a meaningful development for AXT's long-term capital structure, though it doesn't alter the core operating picture of strong demand, expanding margins, and multi-year customer commitments.

The Road Ahead

Management will have opportunities to address the market's concerns directly. Following its appearance at Needham's virtual semiconductor conference in late August, AXT is scheduled to present at B. Riley Securities' consumer and technology conference on September 10, followed by Morgan Stanley's Asia corporate access day on September 21-22. Those appearances could yield more concrete commentary on the China situation or order visibility.

Whether the share price eventually reflects the fundamentals depends less on any single trading session and more on whether the margin expansion proves durable in coming quarters. A customer like Lumentum doesn't commit five years of capacity and write eight-figure checks upfront without confidence in its supplier's quality. The pieces for a fundamental re-rating are in place — but as the recent tape demonstrates, the market isn't extending any credit for past performance.
