BASF's Recycling Push Gathers Awards as Deal Certainty Remains Elusive

BASF won two recycling awards, but its Shanghai trial, Highsun JV letter, Taiwan plan and Evonik talks remain early-stage or non-binding.

BASF has picked up two honours for its polyamide-6 recycling pilot projects, even as a separate circular-materials initiative in China and a string of strategic agreements remain at the testing or intent stage. The awards — the MATERIALICA Award 2026 in the "CO? Efficiency" category and second place at the Fakuma Innovation Award in "Sustainability," announced on Friday and dated 16 October — recognise concrete pilot work, but they sit apart from the company's open-ended structural and acquisition plans.

The distinction matters for anyone tracking the stock. A pilot project that wins a prize is not the same as a signed joint venture, and an intent document is not a binding order.

Shanghai trial turns to used pillows

BASF launched a recycling initiative in Shanghai yesterday with Tongji University and Shanghai Yida Resource Recycling Technology. The partners collect and assess used polyurethane-foam pillows, with the focus on possible recycling routes and new applications. It is a practical trial — not an established reclamation process. According to BASF, the project links collection of the spent pillows with an examination of how they might be used again, starting from products that have already served their original purpose. Which recycling paths and applications prove viable is precisely what the work is meant to establish. For investors, the takeaway is narrow: the partners have begun, and the commercial outcome is still under review.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

Intentions stack up, commitments stay thin

Earlier in the week, BASF and Highsun Holding Group disclosed a non-binding letter of intent to explore combining their European polyamide-6 value-chain activities in a possible 50:50 joint venture. The partners are also examining whether to fold in worldwide extrusion operations outside North America — so both the execution and the potential scope remain undecided. A review, the company makes clear, is not a settled reorganisation of the business.

A day later, BASF signed a letter of intent with Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs covering the planned expansion of its Taoyuan site. The plan envisages additional production capacity for semiconductor materials, stronger quality-analysis capabilities and an enlarged innovation centre. No specific investments or binding projects were named, leaving the economic contribution undefined for now.

Evonik: willingness to talk, not a raised bid

The possible Evonik takeover follows the same pattern of separating readiness from commitment. A dpa-AFX report last week said BASF would be prepared to discuss a higher offer — but only after gaining access to Evonik's books. A person familiar with the transaction cited that condition to the news agency. Evonik had rejected the initial bid of EUR 22.15 per share as too low, and no binding new offer was on the table, according to the report. Willingness to keep talking should not be read as an already improved bid.

The next hard number

The third-quarter 2026 results, scheduled for 28 October 2026, are the next fixed point for putting numbers on any of this. Until then, the letters of intent say nothing about additional earnings or investment volumes. What counts is not how many projects BASF announces but how far each has progressed — and on that measure, the Shanghai trial, the Taiwan plan, the Highsun venture and the Evonik soundings all sit at different, and mostly early, stages.
