BASF's Upgraded Guidance Meets a Harsher Market as Cash Flow Lags
Published on 11/07/2026 at 13:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deBASF shares shed 2.9% to close at €53.98 on Thursday, caught in a broad European retreat that also dragged the DAX lower. The trigger lay outside Ludwigshafen: a global selloff in AI and semiconductor names, with Reuters attributing the market-wide losses to worries about AI stocks and possible restrictions on AI data centres. For anyone holding the chemicals group, the session raised a sharper question than the day's price move — can operational progress hold up when the wider market is under pressure?
Earnings Improve, but the Cash Register Tells Another Story
The company's own numbers offer part of the answer. Roughly a week ago BASF lifted its full-year 2026 guidance for EBITDA before special items to a range of €7.4bn to €7.8bn, up from the previous €6.9bn to €7.7bn. That corridor is now the yardstick by which the year's operating performance will be judged.
Third-quarter figures released alongside the upgrade showed sales of €16.4bn, a 14% increase on the prior-year period, while EBITDA before special items climbed 15% to €1.6bn. Operating cash flow, however, moved in the opposite direction: at €1.1bn it came in €275m below the year-earlier level, a reminder that stronger headline earnings do not automatically translate into stronger cash generation.
A Herbicide Approval, a Nanjing Plant and a Jeep Part
Beyond the P&L, BASF has kept a steady flow of product announcements coming. On Wednesday it reported that Australia's APVMA had approved Luximax for use on Australian canola — the first Group 30 herbicide with a canola registration in that market, according to the company. A concrete regulatory green light of that kind opens the door to additional business, though only if BASF converts it into commercial volume.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?
The same day brought word of a production site for electronic materials in Nanjing, secured through an investment agreement with the Nanjing Jiangbei New Area signed on Tuesday. Commissioning is targeted for the end of 2028, giving investors a firm date to work toward — and a reminder that the revenue from such a project sits years away. Delays would push back the point at which the site begins to contribute.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, BASF and ParagonCorp put pen to paper on a letter of intent to explore possible collaboration in science-backed cosmetic innovation. Of the three initiatives, this is the least advanced: it commits the partners to nothing more than an examination of options, and it would only become relevant to shareholders if that review produces concrete joint projects.
Awards Season in Detroit
The company's application work in the automotive sector drew its own recognition. At the SPE Automotive Innovation Awards, BASF took the materials category together with Ford and Supavut Thailand for door-handle trim on the 2026 Ford Everest. A second award, in the chassis/hardware category, went to BASF, Stellantis and L&L Products for a composite tunnel reinforcement in the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The week's biggest prize had already arrived on Wednesday, when BASF, Toyota and Vuteq collected both the SPE Automotive Innovation Grand Award and the body-exterior category award for the thermoplastic truck bed of the 2026 Toyota Tacoma.
BASF at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
What Has to Go Right
Weighing these developments against the raised guidance, the bull case rests on execution across projects at very different stages of maturity. The Australian registration is granted; Nanjing has an agreement but awaits construction and a 2028 start-up; the ParagonCorp arrangement is still only a review. Should BASF clear each hurdle and hit its earnings corridor, the operating story remains the stronger argument for a constructive view. Should targets slip or agreed projects stall, the cautious reading gains ground.
The market backdrop adds a variable the company cannot control. Thursday's session demonstrated how quickly a sour trading environment can wash over BASF regardless of its own news flow. Progress on the Nanjing site and tangible results from the ParagonCorp review stand out as potential catalysts between now and the end of 2028, while the upgraded guidance supplies the financial benchmark against which all of it will be measured.
