Bayer's Prostate Cancer Win Comes With a Footnote Investors Should Read

Bayer's darolutamide plus ADT and radiotherapy cut metastasis or death risk 58% in high-risk prostate cancer, but the drug is not yet approved in this setting.

Bayer handed investors a clinical victory on Monday, but the fine print matters as much as the headline number. An interim analysis of the Phase III DASL-HiCaP trial showed that darolutamide, layered on top of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiotherapy, cut the risk of metastases or death by 58% versus placebo plus standard therapy in prostate cancer patients at high risk of recurrence.

The data were released to coincide with a presentation at the ESMO congress, scheduled for 16:30 CET. Bayer described the reduction as statistically significant.

What the 58% Actually Measures

That figure covers a composite endpoint—metastases or death—and should not be read as an equivalent drop in mortality alone. The two outcomes are bundled together, so the risk reduction describes the combined event, not survival on its own.

Bayer also reported that the rate of metastasis-free survival at four years reached 95% among patients on the darolutamide combination, compared with 88% in the control arm. Those two statistics capture different dimensions of the result: one is a relative risk measure, the other an absolute proportion of patients free of an event over the period studied.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bayer?

Context is equally important. Darolutamide was tested as an add-on to ADT and radiotherapy, not as a standalone treatment, and the comparator was placebo plus standard therapy. The positive finding applies specifically to that combination in a high-relapse-risk population. It is also an interim readout, not the final analysis of the study.

And one regulatory caveat hangs over the announcement: darolutamide is not currently approved for this treatment setting.

A Separate Regulatory Thread

The cancer update sits alongside another pipeline development. Roughly two weeks ago, the US Food and Drug Administration accepted Bayer's supplemental application for finerenone in chronic kidney disease among adults without diabetes, backed by positive results from the Phase III FIND-CKD trial.

The two items represent different stages of drug development—a clinical efficacy finding on one hand, a procedural regulatory step on the other—and investors would do well not to treat them as equivalent events. Neither translates directly into a revenue figure.

What the Analysts Had Already Said

Sell-side opinion had turned constructive before the study news landed. JPMorgan reaffirmed its "Overweight" rating and a price target of EUR 61 on October 16. UBS followed a day earlier, on October 15, restating its buy recommendation with a target of EUR 62—while explicitly flagging weakness in Bayer's agricultural division.

That distinction matters: the crop science unit the bank singled out as a drag is not the business the darolutamide data address. A clinical win in oncology does not substitute for scrutiny of operating performance.

Bayer at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Friday's closing price of EUR 43.92 predates the release and therefore reflects none of Monday's news, leaving the study announcement to be assessed separately from prior trading.

The Date That Matters Next

The next scheduled checkpoint is November 3, when Bayer publishes results for the third quarter of 2026. At that point the focus shifts from pipeline progress back to the financial picture—and to the agricultural weakness UBS has already highlighted.

For now, the advance sits firmly on the clinical side of the ledger. Whether it eventually converts into approved indications and incremental sales is a question the DASL-HiCaP data alone cannot answer.
