Berkshire Reshuffles Its Portfolio While Extending Insurance Reach Into Poland
Published on 10/30/2026 at 15:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deBerkshire Hathaway's latest batch of disclosures tells two very different stories, and investors would do well to keep them apart. On one side sits a steady reshaping of the equity portfolio; on the other, a series of operational moves inside the insurance arm that stretch from a French promotion to a fresh foothold in Central Europe.
Start with the capital side. Berkshire sold another 382,563 DaVita shares on Tuesday, according to a mandatory filing that put the price at $180.4305 apiece. The same disclosure reported an economically attributable stake of 28,314,666 DaVita shares remaining after the transaction. That is a single holding being trimmed — not a broad retreat from equities — and it followed a familiar pattern rather than signaling any change in investment philosophy.
A $330 Million Bet on Bending Spoons
Capital was flowing in the opposite direction elsewhere. Berkshire closed an additional $330 million investment in Bending Spoons, receiving 10 million ordinary shares at $33.00 each. The move lifts Berkshire's stake in the company to roughly 4%, a figure that says more about the scale of the commitment than the bare fact of another purchase.
The two transactions point in different directions — a reduced position in DaVita, an enlarged one in Bending Spoons — and no direct financing link between them can be inferred. What they share is that both are concrete portfolio decisions, distinct from any movement in Berkshire's own share price.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Berkshire Hathaway?
That distinction matters, because media reports on October 23 attributed the stock's recent advance to a rotation out of technology and AI names into defensive sectors, including consumer staples, real estate and utilities. Such coverage describes investor positioning; it says nothing about which holdings Berkshire itself should be buying or selling. Defensive demand and individual portfolio choices are separate questions and deserve separate treatment.
UBS Raises Its Target
Analyst action added to the upbeat mood. Brian Meredith of UBS reaffirmed his buy rating on Berkshire's B-class shares on October 22 and lifted his price target to $628 from $604. Helpful as that is, it does not answer how the individual transactions will perform economically. The durable takeaway remains the portfolio rebalancing itself: out of some DaVita stock, further into Bending Spoons.
Running alongside those capital moves, Berkshire's insurance units have been busy on several fronts. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection published its 2027 travel safety report on Wednesday, naming Canada, New Zealand and Australia as the safest countries and placing Montreal, Zurich and Amsterdam at the top of the city rankings. The report is an assessment of destinations, not an earnings forecast — no additional premium volume or profitability improvement can be read into a safety ranking.
Leadership in France, a New Market in Poland
Personnel news came from Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance, which on Monday promoted Virginie Pelletier to head of executive and professional liability in France. The appointment carries real management responsibility within the insurance business, even if it does not lend itself to a number.
Berkshire Hathaway at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Further afield, Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance confirmed on October 19 that it had entered the Polish market, appointing Carsten Keune as country manager based in Warsaw. His remit covers Poland along with Central and Eastern Europe. Unlike the travel report or the French promotion, this is a genuine operational step — an expansion of geographic presence. Any statement about its future contribution to results would be a forecast rather than a fact.
Taken together, the picture is a patchwork of decisions, each with its own weight: a regional insurance build-out, a leadership appointment, and shifts in the equity portfolio. The useful exercise for investors is to weigh each on its own terms rather than treating every corporate announcement as an immediate boost to earnings.
