BioNTech shares climbed 3.9% yesterday, a move that coincided with a fresh collaboration announcement and followed the company's quarterly report and an upgraded revenue outlook. The advance came even as three separate research houses trimmed their price targets on the German biotech, a split-screen reaction that captures the tension between near-term pipeline news and longer-range valuation.

Morgan Stanley cut its target to $106 from $114 while keeping an Overweight rating, according to media reports — a lower mark that stopped well short of a downgrade. BofA Securities followed the same pattern, reducing its target to $108 from $114 and reaffirming its Buy call. A third analyst house lowered its own target to $125 from $135, also maintaining a Buy recommendation. The three new targets now span a range of $106 to $125.

A Breast Cancer Bet With Gilead

The collaboration driving sentiment was announced on 22 October, when BioNTech and Gilead Sciences unveiled a clinical trial partnership and supply agreement centered on a planned drug combination for breast cancer. The two companies intend to study BioNTech's Pumitamig alongside Gilead's Sacituzumab Govitecan in the planned Phase 3 ROSETTA Breast-01 trial, subject to regulatory approval. The combination would be tested as a first-line treatment in selected patients with locally advanced or metastatic triple-negative breast cancer — specifically those with low or absent PD-L1 expression.

That program sits alongside BioNTech's separate partnership with Bristol Myers Squibb. The two firms published initial global Phase 2 data from ROSETTA Lung-107 on 25 October, evaluating Pumitamig plus Docetaxel in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer after disease progression on a combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Among the 30 patients evaluable for efficacy, the confirmed objective response rate came in at 36.7%, according to the first results from that mid-stage study.

Third-Quarter Earnings: Profit Despite a Revenue Slide

The quarterly figures themselves told a story of shrinking top line and improving bottom line. BioNTech posted a net profit of EUR 184.5 million for the third quarter of 2026, a sharp reversal from the EUR 28.7 million loss recorded in the same period a year earlier. Revenue, however, fell 15.1% year on year to EUR 1.29 billion — or EUR 1,289.2 million as reported — with the company attributing the decline mainly to weaker demand for COVID-19 vaccines. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at EUR 1.76.

On guidance, BioNTech lifted the floor of its 2026 revenue forecast to EUR 1.7 billion from EUR 1.6 billion, leaving the upper end unchanged at EUR 1.9 billion. The company's cash position — comprising liquid funds, cash equivalents and marketable securities — stood at EUR 16.2 billion.

Mixed Signals From the Wider Pipeline

Not every data point has been encouraging. Roughly two weeks ago, BioNTech and DualityBio reported results for their breast cancer candidate Trastuzumab Pamirtecan. The drug met its primary endpoint, with progression-free survival improving over chemotherapy by a statistically significant but modest margin; overall survival data were not yet mature.

The safety picture drew scrutiny as well. The companies reported more frequent interstitial lung disease than in earlier trials, including isolated severe or fatal cases. Citing the available efficacy and safety data, they saw only limited benefit potential in that treatment setting and said they are discussing next steps.
