BioNTech and Bristol Myers Squibb lifted the lid on their ROSETTA Lung-107 Phase 2 study on Tuesday, reporting a confirmed objective response rate of 36.7% for the pumitamig-docetaxel combination. The figure rests on 30 patients evaluable for efficacy, all with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer whose disease had progressed after a first-line regimen of immunotherapy plus chemotherapy.

Median progression-free survival came in at 6.9 months — though that number derives from the full treated cohort of 50 patients, meaning the response and PFS readouts are drawn from groups of different sizes. It is a distinction worth keeping in view when the headline percentage starts circulating.

A Gilead Handshake, and What It Does Not Yet Prove

Separately, BioNTech has struck a clinical collaboration with Gilead Sciences to test pumitamig alongside sacituzumab govitecan — sold as Trodelvy — as a first-line treatment for locally advanced or metastatic triple-negative breast cancer in patients with low or absent PD-L1 expression. The Phase 3 ROSETTA Breast-01 trial is to be adapted for the purpose, with regulatory sign-off still required.

BioNTech will sponsor and run the study; Gilead supplies the drug. That is a concrete development step, not evidence that the combination will outperform Trodelvy alone. An agreed trial creates the possibility of new insight — it does not pre-empt the result.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

The Other Side of the Ledger

Roughly a fortnight ago the picture looked rather different. BNT113, combined with pembrolizumab, failed to deliver a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival versus pembrolizumab alone in the Phase 2/3 AHEAD-MERIT study, which covers metastatic HPV16-positive head and neck cancer. The trial continues in order to assess overall survival.

Neither verdict settles the wider programme, and neither is meaningless. A broad oncology pipeline will always throw up wins and losses side by side; a fresh collaboration does not arithmetically offset a clinical setback, and a single miss does not automatically condemn other drug combinations. The temptation to slap one label on the whole company is best resisted.

Sixteen Abstracts, Ten Tumour Types

Breadth, after all, is not the same as uniform proof of efficacy. BioNTech has flagged 16 abstracts spanning ten tumour types for ESMO, including first Phase 2 data for pumitamig in various combinations. What matters for investors is less the count of presentations than what any single result actually permits one to say. Different combinations and different diseases pose different questions.

TĂĽbingen: A Deal That Went Nowhere

Away from the clinic, Handelsblatt reported on 15 October that negotiations to sell the Tübingen site had fallen through. An investor consortium led by Peter Löw had reportedly offered up to EUR 20 million; BioNTech had been planning closure. The site question belongs to a different slice of the company's development than a clinical endpoint — which is precisely why it belongs in the economic assessment without serving as a proxy for research quality.

What 3 November Has to Deliver

BioNTech will publish third-quarter 2026 figures and a corporate outlook on 3 November, a date announced on Tuesday, with an investor call and webcast scheduled for 8 a.m. US Eastern time. The occasion offers a chance to pull these strands together — though it substitutes for neither study data nor a verdict on any particular combination therapy.

The yardstick, then, is clarity rather than volume: how much weight does BioNTech attach to each development step, and how does it frame them economically? A convincing valuation is not built by adding up as many announcements as possible. It comes from cleanly separating what has been achieved, what is being tested, and what remains open.
