Bloom Energy's 138% Revenue Jump Runs Into a $181 Million Cash Question

Bloom Energy delivered the kind of top-line growth most hardware makers can only dream about, but investors spent Friday focused on what that growth cost. The fuel-cell specialist reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $1.2358 billion, up 138.1% from a year earlier, yet the stock fell 11% as concerns about cash burn and capital spending overshadowed the headline beat. Broader weakness across artificial-intelligence-linked equities added to the pressure.

The cash-flow picture depends heavily on where you draw the line. For the quarter alone, free cash flow came in at negative $181 million, with capital expenditures of $153.5 million weighing on the result. Zoom out to the year to date, however, and Bloom says free cash flow is positive at $41.6 million. Adjusted earnings per share for the quarter reached $0.94.

Management also raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion. The company filed its quarterly report on Form 10-Q and an 8-K notice covering results for the period ended September 30, 2026, both submitted on Thursday.

Wall Street Splits on the Print

Analysts moved in opposite directions after the numbers landed. JPMorgan Chase trimmed its price target to $292 from $314 on Friday while keeping an Overweight rating on the shares. Morgan Stanley went the other way, lifting its target to $335 from $310, also maintaining Overweight, citing raised delivery forecasts as the basis for the bump.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bloom Energy?

Operating leverage, meanwhile, is improving. The adjusted operating margin climbed to 23.1% from 8.9% in the year-earlier quarter — a meaningful gain in underlying profitability. What that margin does not answer is how much freely available cash the expansion will ultimately generate.

The Grid Is the Real Bottleneck

Behind the growth story sits a structural problem for data-center operators: they cannot get connected to the power grid fast enough. Rystad Energy expects investment in fuel cells for data centers to swell from $2.8 billion to roughly $30 billion by 2030. That forecast describes a market being built out, not revenue already locked in for any individual supplier.

The timing gap is stark. Rystad reckons US grid connections for large power consumers take three to six years, which means about 40% of projected US data-center capacity for 2030 could end up relying on on-site generation. That is the opening Bloom is chasing — a sales channel that bypasses the traditional wait for additional grid capacity.

Oracle: Interest Is Not the Same as Orders

The Oracle relationship illustrates both the opportunity and its limits. Oracle plans to source up to 2.8 gigawatts of Bloom systems, of which 1.2 gigawatts are contractually agreed. The full planned volume should not be mistaken for a firm order.

Bloom Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

That distinction matters for anyone valuing the growth outlook. Rystad explicitly cautions that framework agreements do not necessarily translate into binding purchases. Large project announcements demonstrate interest, but they carry less planning certainty than committed contracts. Bloom is reportedly set to publish order-backlog figures only in early 2027, leaving the line between firm obligations and longer-term intentions unusually important in the meantime.

For investors, the test is straightforward: whether rising demand for on-site power converts into additional firm orders and, eventually, positive free cash flow. The market forecasts provide the tailwind. Delivering on them is up to Bloom.
