Bloom Energy has spent the past month proving that the AI-driven power crunch is more than a talking point. The fuel-cell maker's shares have climbed 38% over 30 days and 222% since the start of the year, closing Tuesday at EUR 241.50 before extending the advance to EUR 249.00 — a gain of 3.1% — by midweek. The immediate catalyst is mechanical: S&P Dow Jones Indices added the company to the S&P 500, a reweighting that took effect before Monday's opening bell and rippled across the index family, including the S&P MidCap 400 and S&P SmallCap 600. Funds tracking the benchmark have no choice but to buy, and that forced institutional demand has kept a bid under the stock through Wednesday.

The reweighting is a technical event, not a verdict on the business. What matters more is why Bloom earned the seat in the first place.

A Structural Shortage, Not a Story Stock

Cloud operators and data centers are hitting hard capacity limits when they try to connect to conventional grids. Permitting and transmission buildouts routinely take years, while each new generation of high-performance servers demands baseload power immediately. Bloom's solid-oxide fuel cells slot directly into that gap by generating electricity on-site, and the market need is quantifiable. Stephen Byrd of Morgan Stanley projects a 33-gigawatt US power deficit through 2028, and his analysis singles out on-site generation as a primary beneficiary — with Bloom positioned as the leading supplier.

The operating numbers are already reflecting that thesis. Second-quarter 2026 revenue reached USD 1.07 billion, comfortably ahead of analyst estimates. Inclusion in global benchmarks including the FTSE All-World Index and the S&P 500 Equal Weighted Index has added a further layer of institutional support.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bloom Energy?

The Price of Admission

None of that comes cheap. Bloom trades at a price-to-sales ratio above 25, a multiple that dwarfs the sector average and leaves almost no margin for execution errors or delays on large projects. At these levels, investors are paying upfront for a growth promise that must be delivered flawlessly and on schedule.

Legal exposure compounds the valuation risk. A securities class action is pending in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, centered on allegations that the company misrepresented its true dependence on Chinese supply chains for scandium, a critical raw material sourced through intermediaries. Investors seeking lead-plaintiff status face a filing deadline of September 28.

Insider Sales Add Another Data Point

Corporate filings show management trimming positions alongside the rally. On September 16, Chief Operations Officer Satish Chitoori sold 2,870 common shares on the open market at an average price of USD 270.06. The company stated the transaction covered tax withholding obligations tied to equity programs. Chief Accounting Officer Maciej Kurzymski disposed of 2,295 shares the same day at a weighted average of USD 268.42, a sale totaling USD 616,023.

Weighing the Two Halves

Bloom's technological position at the center of AI infrastructure is genuinely compelling, and structural power scarcity gives it a durable demand base. But an overheated multiple paired with unresolved litigation argues for meaningful near-term downside risk. The operational performance deserves recognition; chasing the latest leg higher at these prices does not.
