Bloom Energy's 800V DC Bet: A $3.6 Billion Answer to AI's Power Bill

Bloom Energy unveiled an 800V DC fuel-cell design for AI data centers, claiming $3.6B capex savings per gigawatt, as Oracle's Jupiter project faces delays.

Bloom Energy used mid-September to unveil an 800V DC architecture aimed squarely at AI data centers, a technical pivot that reframes how the fuel-cell maker wants to be valued. Announced on September 16, the direct-current design is built to strip out transformers and the conversion losses that have long been treated as unavoidable overhead in high-density computing.

The company's own special report puts hard numbers behind the pitch. For a one-gigawatt AI data center, Bloom says the 800V DC fuel-cell setup can cut capital expenditure outside of the computing hardware itself by "$3.6 billion, or 27%." Stretched across five years, the total-cost-of-ownership advantage reaches "$5.5 billion, or 9%." Those figures are the crux of the investment case: when operators are already committing enormous budgets, energy efficiency stops being a footnote and becomes the deciding factor in procurement.

Oracle Ties Run Deeper Than One Delayed Campus

The commercial backdrop is a partnership with Oracle that spans as much as 2.8 gigawatts of total capacity, of which 1.2 gigawatts is locked in under contract. That cushion mattered last Thursday, when Oracle invoked a force majeure clause tied to its Jupiter AI data center project in New Mexico, citing a gas pipeline build pushed back to February 2027. The planned campus carries a $165 billion price tag and is designed to run on Bloom fuel cells.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bloom Energy?

Fears of a broader fallout were tempered the following day. Morgan Stanley's David Arcaro kept an Overweight rating and a $310 price target on the stock, arguing the two companies' cooperation extends well beyond the Jupiter delays and that existing contract provisions shield Bloom. Investors took the reassurance: the German-listed shares closed Friday at EUR 254.50, a gain of 8.5% on the day, with a market capitalization of roughly EUR 68.95 billion.

A Court Calendar That Won't Clear

Legal noise continues to run alongside the operational story. Deadlines tied to an investor class action opened more than a month ago, a stretch during which the stock has added 14.4%. Law firms Kaplan Fox and Bragar Eagel & Squire have flagged an ongoing case examining claims about the company's business outlook and its procurement of scandium through intermediaries in China. The proposed class period runs from February 27, 2025 to July 8, 2026, and shareholders have until September 28, 2026 to seek the lead plaintiff role.

Suits of this kind have become a familiar fixture on US exchanges after steep rallies, and this one has done little to dent confidence. A fresh source of institutional support arrived roughly a week ago with inclusion in the S&P 500.

Momentum Cuts Both Ways

The stock is up 239% year to date, a run that leaves plenty of optimism already baked into the valuation. Pullbacks are plausible at any point after that kind of move, particularly with unresolved supply-chain questions posing an operational risk. What tips the balance, in the bull reading, is that Bloom offers a concrete answer to the power hunger of modern technology parks — and that its relevance to AI data centers should ultimately carry more weight than the legal aftershocks of past reporting periods. The open question for market participants is whether the contracted capacity can be delivered on schedule once the logistical hurdles at the planned sites are cleared.
