BMW opens i3 Sedan reservations Tuesday and debuts the G50 3 Series Wednesday, with production leaving Munich, as shares sit 1.4% above their 52-week low.

BMW is staging back-to-back product milestones this week, even as its share price hovers dangerously close to a 52-week low and the board prepares to face investors at a two-day capital markets event starting Tuesday.

Reservations for the i3 Sedan, the Munich-based automaker's new electric sedan, open Tuesday at 6:01 p.m. Eastern Time — earlier than originally planned, according to an email the company sent to registered users. The accelerated timeline signals BMW's intent to lock in demand in the crucial U.S. market ahead of the formal launch.

3 Series Production Leaves Munich for the First Time

The spotlight shifts on Wednesday to the world premiere of the next-generation 3 Series, developed under the internal code G50. With the generational change, BMW is also redrawing its manufacturing map: media reports indicate that production of the classic model will leave the company's home plant in Munich for the first time, relocating to Dingolfing. The all-electric i3, by contrast, stays in Munich.

The drivetrain lineup is getting attention too. BMW reportedly plans to add the M350 xDrive, a new M Performance variant powered by an inline six-cylinder engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, delivering 443 horsepower.

Margin Outlook Weighs on Sentiment

These launches land in a demanding business year. BMW has guided toward a significant decline in pre-tax group profit. On the leadership side, Dorothea von Boxberg took over as head of HR and labor director on September 1, succeeding Ilka Horstmeier.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?

The weaker operating performance has taken a visible toll on the stock. At a current price of EUR 56.04, the shares are down 40% since the start of the year. On Friday, the stock closed at EUR 56.10, down 1.7%, leaving it just 1.4% above its 52-week low of EUR 55.32, which it touched only last Friday.

Analysts Split as Investor Caution Builds

Market watchers have turned more cautious of late, cooling the optimism that followed Berenberg's upgrade of the stock from "Hold" to "Buy" on September 16, when the bank lifted its price target from EUR 69 to EUR 75. Analyst Romain Gourvil cited a more solid expectation base following June's profit warning, while flagging persistent structural problems in the Chinese market.

The board will address its medium- and long-term positioning in detail during the investor meeting on September 29 and 30.

Battery Award, Greener Production, Humanoid Robots

Despite the subdued mood, management is pressing ahead on the technology front. On Thursday, the World New Energy Vehicle Congress 2026 in China honored BMW's Gen6 high-voltage battery with the "Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology" award — recognition in the company's single most important market that underscores the relevance of the next battery generation for the future lineup.

Efficiency and manufacturing are advancing in parallel. On Wednesday, BMW said it would extend the 3 Series' sustainability approach to additional drivetrain variants, targeting a lower CO?e footprint through shorter routes within its Bavarian production cluster, optimized supply chains and higher secondary-material quotas. The Leipzig plant marked a domestic first on September 21, deploying humanoid robots in a regular production setting.

Software Update and Buyback Support

BMW also announced Friday that its BMW Maps system will, from October 2026, merge navigation and driver-assistance data into a single three-dimensional view, aiming to make in-car operation clearer for drivers.

Meanwhile, the company is putting its liquidity to work through its 2025/2027 share buyback program. Between September 14 and 20, it repurchased 713,546 ordinary shares on the open market for roughly EUR 44.15 million — a move that shores up the capital structure ahead of the investor gathering.

Whether the coming model reveals can give the stock fresh momentum may become clearer in the days ahead.
