Powertech Technology intends to sink $400 million into a joint venture with Broadcom focused on advanced chip packaging in Singapore, with production potentially getting underway in 2028, according to remarks from Powertech chairman Tsai cited by Reuters on Friday. The plan adds a manufacturing dimension to a Broadcom story that investors have mostly been reading through the lens of AI accelerator demand and the financing machinery built around it.

That machinery is substantial. Roughly two weeks ago, Bank of America, Blackstone, Citi and Morgan Stanley unveiled a $63 billion financing structure designed to let a special-purpose vehicle purchase Broadcom AI chips and networking gear for lease to Anthropic. Shipments are expected to begin in 2027. Broadcom's own disclosure in an SEC filing put the maximum contingent exposure tied to AI rack leases at about $43 billion once the racks are delivered. In the event of a customer default, the relevant figure would be the gap between 72.5% of outstanding lease payments and the salvage value of recovered racks.

Networking, Optics and the Ethernet Bet

Broadcom's push into AI infrastructure stretches across several layers of connectivity — inside computing systems, between systems, and across larger network build-outs. The company has also rolled out optical technologies under the CPO and OCI labels. Financing partners, meanwhile, have taken on portions of certain agreements covering the purchase of AI racks and the associated customer leasing contracts, a detail Broadcom confirmed separately.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Broadcom?

The upshot is that capital structure has become as central to the business as silicon. External backers underwrite the rollout of large projects, which supports Broadcom's position as technology supplier — provided the leasing arrangements hold and the covered default conditions do not materialize.

Policy Headwinds and a Rival's Move

Sentiment around semiconductors and AI infrastructure has been shaky. Reuters reported Thursday that the Nasdaq fell sharply after Democratic gains in the midterm elections, with investors fretting over tighter AI regulation and a slower pace of data-center construction. The agency linked the pressure on chip stocks to those concerns. Weak Qualcomm results added to the drag that day, and an earlier selloff on October 30 — triggered by Intel's soft fourth-quarter outlook and disappointing results from Intel and Amazon — had already put the economics of AI spending under scrutiny. Broadcom was among the chip names caught in that downdraft.

Competition is heating up as well. Marvell Technology agreed on November 2 to acquire Lumentum Holdings in an all-stock deal valued at $115 billion including debt. Reuters framed the transaction as a boost to Marvell's position in hardware for AI data centers and in its rivalry with Broadcom.

What Investors Are Really Pricing

Strip away the headlines and the same question keeps surfacing: can the build-out be financed and delivered on schedule? Broadcom stands to gain from its role as supplier if investment intentions turn into shovels-in-the-ground projects. Approval hurdles and economic doubts would cut the other way, raising uncertainty. Funding, construction and actual utilization all have to line up — that is the yardstick against which the AI expansion, and the valuation attached to it, will ultimately be measured.
