BYD Maps Out 2028 for L3 Autonomy as Base Access Curbs and Brazil Permits Cloud the Horizon
Published on 10/24/2026 at 12:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD shares closed Wednesday's session up 4.4%, lifted by a broad recovery in Hong Kong's auto and lithium-battery names as investors returned to electric-vehicle stocks following the previous session's sweeping selloff. The gain owed more to sector-wide tailwinds than to any single company development — a distinction worth keeping in mind, given the mixed corporate news flow that accompanied it.
On the technological front, the Shenzhen-based manufacturer used a response to an investor query published yesterday to name three development priorities: megawatt-level fast charging, the next generation of its Blade Battery, and cell-to-body integration. Material progress on any of these will be disclosed through official channels once the company meets its relevant reporting obligations. The filing therefore sketches a direction of travel rather than confirming any near-term product launch — a line investors should not blur.
Automated driving carries an equally long runway. Executive Vice President Yang Dongsheng said on Wednesday that BYD expects vehicles capable of conditional Level 3 autonomy in 2028, with higher levels of automation following one to two years later. Those are projections, not milestones already reached.
Kadena Restriction Is Base-Specific, Not a Japan-Wide Ban
While the company pushes its international build-out, a Reuters report published yesterday said the US military plans to bar BYD vehicles from Kadena Air Base in Japan, citing security risks. The restriction is set to take effect on Monday. It applies to one named installation and does not amount to a nationwide sales prohibition in Japan — a boundary that matters when weighing the headline against BYD's broader Japanese market exposure. Nor can the day's advance be read as a verdict on how heavily shareholders are discounting the measure.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
Malaysia Charging Pact Still Exploratory
A second strand of the overseas story concerns an intent letter signed Wednesday between BYD Malaysia and Gentari. The two parties will examine possible applications for BYD Flash Charging and battery-storage infrastructure in Malaysia. It is an exploratory arrangement, not a confirmed infrastructure rollout; for now its significance lies in the collaboration itself and the assessment of potential use cases. No specific installations, and no revenue flowing from them, can yet be inferred.
Brazil Doubling Awaits Approvals
In parallel, BYD is pursuing an expansion of its Brazilian plant. Reuters reported yesterday that the company is seeking permits to double annual capacity to 600,000 vehicles. Alexandre Baldy, the manager responsible for Brazil, said the press, welding and paint shops are close to completion. The distinction between expansion intent and approved capacity remains the crux: the doubling is a plan, and finishing individual production areas does not substitute for the permits being sought.
October 29 Board Meeting Becomes the Next Hard Data Point
Against that backdrop, the business figures move to center stage. BYD announced on October 14 a board meeting for October 29, at which the third-quarter and nine-month results through September 30, 2026 will be reviewed and approved on an unaudited basis. Analyst positioning is split between conviction and more cautious valuation assumptions. UOB Kay Hian included BYD among its preferred buy recommendations in a report on the Chinese auto market yesterday, while flagging the quarterly numbers due next week.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The rebound, in other words, should not be equated with a uniformly more bullish assessment. Sector momentum is supporting the stock even as a more restrained view of its valuation headroom persists. The upcoming earnings — alongside the longer-dated technology roadmap — will offer the next concrete reference point.
