BYD's Brazil Blueprint and a Two-Tier Analyst Reset
Published on 10/27/2026 at 16:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deJPMorgan has taken a sharper view of BYD's mainland-listed shares, cutting its rating to Underweight from Neutral while trimming earnings expectations — a move that lands just before the automaker's scheduled quarterly report. The same brokerage, however, left its stance on the Hong Kong line untouched, meaning the gloomier call is not a blanket verdict on the company.
The distinction matters more than the headline. For the A-shares, the target was lowered to RMB 65 from RMB 88. For the H-shares, the price objective came down to HKD 60 from HKD 88 while the Neutral rating stayed in place. Two listings, two currencies, two separate calls.
What the downgrade does — and doesn't — say
The reduced profit forecast applies to the group as a whole and to the year ahead. It is an analyst estimate, not a reported result and not company guidance, so it should not be read as a verdict on business already booked. That gap will be tested when the next set of quarterly figures arrives, offering a fresh reference point without on its own confirming or refuting the full-year assumption.
Meanwhile, the growth story has not stood still. Reuters reported on Friday that BYD is seeking permits to double the annual capacity of its Brazilian plant to 600,000 vehicles, citing the senior vice president responsible for Brazil. The caveat sits in the paperwork: the company is pursuing approvals, which makes the larger figure an expansion target rather than capacity already on stream.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
Separately, BYD aims to reach monthly output of 25,000 vehicles in Brazil by the end of 2026 — a production goal distinct from the annual capacity ambition. On the product side, the third-generation Qin Plus DM-i made its Chinese market debut, adding another plank to the growth case.
A base, not a market
Then there is the restriction that has drawn attention in Japan. According to Reuters, the US military announced on Friday that BYD vehicles would be barred from Kadena Air Base, citing an unacceptable and unmanageable risk to personnel and operations. The exclusion was due to take effect yesterday.
That announcement is specific to the military installation on Okinawa and should not be conflated with a general ban on BYD vehicles in Japan. It concerns access to one site, and on its own it does not demonstrate a company-wide hit to sales.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Weighing it all together, the expansion of the model lineup is only part of the picture. Execution against the production plans — and the precise scope of regulatory or security-driven limits — carry just as much weight for investors. The upcoming earnings release remains the nearest hard checkpoint, and JPMorgan's revision has set a more guarded frame around it, with an investment rating explicitly confined to the A-shares.
