BYD's Brazil Capacity Push and a Kadena Access Curbs Sit Behind a Sector-Wide Rally

BYD gained 4.4% in a sector-wide rebound, while Kadena base curbs, a Malaysia charging pact and Brazil capacity plans shape the outlook.

BYD shares climbed 4.4% in the previous session, but the advance had little to do with the company itself. A broad recovery across makers of electrified vehicles and lithium batteries in Hong Kong lifted the whole group, with Li Auto, Nio, XPeng and CATL all joining the move. BYD closed at €8.17 on Friday. The gain is best read as part of a sector swing rather than a verdict on any single corporate headline.

That distinction matters, because the news flow around BYD has been pulling in opposite directions.

Kadena Curbs and a Confined Scope

Reuters reported that the US military intends to bar BYD vehicles from Kadena Air Base in Japan, citing security risks and what it described as an unacceptable threat to personnel and mission that could not be sufficiently mitigated. The restriction is set to take effect on Monday, 26 October.

The scope is narrow and worth spelling out. The measure covers one named military installation; it does not amount to a general ban on BYD sales in Japan. It is also an announced step whose start date has not yet arrived. How much weight investors are placing on it cannot be inferred from a single day's share price move.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

An Exploratory Charging Pact in Malaysia

Elsewhere on the overseas front, BYD Malaysia and Gentari signed a letter of intent on Wednesday to examine possible applications for BYD Flash Charging and battery-storage infrastructure in Malaysia. The agreement is exploratory in nature, not a confirmed infrastructure rollout. For now its significance lies in the collaboration itself and the review of potential use cases; no specific installations or resulting revenue can be derived from it.

Brazil: Ambition Versus Approved Capacity

The more concrete operational story is in Brazil, where BYD's local unit is seeking approvals to double annual plant capacity to 600,000 vehicles. Alexandre Baldy, the manager responsible for Brazil, said the press, welding and paint facilities are close to completion. Investment in the plant has already topped 5.5 billion reais.

The key is to keep the expansion target separate from approved capacity. The doubling is a plan; finishing individual production areas does not substitute for the permits being applied for. Reuters also reported earlier in the week that BYD introduced the second-generation Seagull in China, offered in five variants at regular prices between RMB 65,900 and RMB 99,900.

October 29 Becomes the Real Reference Point

The next confirmed corporate date is the board meeting on 29 October, when directors are due to review and approve the unaudited third-quarter results for the nine months to 30 September 2026, along with their publication. That session is a scheduled step in financial reporting, not the results themselves — which is why Friday's sector-driven rebound says nothing about the figures still to come. Those numbers should offer a firmer basis for valuation than the latest market-wide recovery on its own.
