BYD's Export Engine Roars While Washington Summit Looms Over the Road Ahead

BYD shares slipped 2.3% on Wednesday to close at EUR 8.90, a retreat that lands at an awkward juncture: the Chinese automaker is pushing harder than ever into foreign markets just as geopolitics moves to center stage. On Thursday, global investors turn their attention to Washington, where Xi Jinping and Donald Trump are set to meet — a summit that could reshape the calculus for Chinese exporters.

The stock has shed 17% so far this year, weighed down by aggressive discounting and lingering doubts about worldwide EV demand. Yet the company's overseas momentum tells a strikingly different story.

August Deliveries Paint a Two-Speed Picture

Total vehicle sales climbed to 440,293 units in August, a 17.8% jump from a year earlier, according to Reuters. The headline number, however, undersells the real shift: exports surged 134.5% over the same period to 189,466 vehicles, a fresh record for the manufacturer.

That split matters. Competition at home keeps intensifying, making cross-border expansion the company's essential growth engine. For shareholders, the question is no longer whether BYD can dominate in China — it already does — but whether it can capture meaningful share abroad.

Management has set a lofty bar. Company targets call for overseas volume to exceed 2.5 million vehicles by 2027, a figure that signals deep confidence in the group's competitiveness beyond Asia. Backing that ambition, BYD continues to broaden its product lineup and is building local manufacturing capacity directly in target markets, shortening supply chains and deepening its European footprint.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Home Turf: Price Cuts and Fresh Trims

In China, BYD is keeping rivals on the back foot through steady model refreshes and pricing moves. The company unveiled the Feichi Edition of its Yuan Up model, which delivers 501 kilometers of range on the CLTC test cycle. For the 401-kilometer variant, BYD trimmed the price by 18,000 Yuan.

The updated vehicle comes in five trim levels, with official list prices spanning 74,800 Yuan to 104,800 Yuan. Such regular updates are designed to defend market share against domestic competitors in the compact EV segment.

Beyond that category, the group is refreshing other lines as well. The vehicle serves as the new flagship within BYD's Ocean product family, extending the brand's reach into higher-margin territory alongside its Denza range.

Two Paths, One Pivot Point

The bull case rests on BYD executing its global expansion without major disruption. If the company can pair its worldwide model offensive with stable margins, the current valuation leaves considerable room for recovery. Success in Western markets could transform BYD from a China-centric volume player into a genuinely global manufacturer.

The bear case draws its energy from trade barriers and cooling demand. Should the Washington summit surface new tensions, tighter restrictions could follow. A restrictive stance from importing nations would complicate market access and put the company's sales targets at risk. If export momentum falls short of those ambitious plans, the market would need to recalibrate its growth expectations quickly — and a slide back toward the 52-week low of EUR 8.03, which currently offers some cushion, becomes a real possibility.

The Next Catalyst on the Calendar

For current holders and newcomers alike, two clear scenarios are taking shape. As long as overseas operations keep supporting target corridors of nearly two million units, the broader trend stays intact. Should regulatory intervention knock export momentum off course, the valuation framework wobbles.

Investors should mark one date now. The upcoming shareholder meeting will address charter amendments, board elections, and resolutions on the so-called asset-pooling business. That gathering should offer the first real signals on how BYD is organizing itself for the phase ahead.
