BYD's October Sales Surge Meets a Tougher Earnings Bar

BYD sold 490,168 new-energy vehicles in October, a 10.97% year-on-year increase that Reuters linked to strong export demand. Investors greeted the figures by pushing the stock up 3.2%, with Bloomberg tying the gains to robust overseas appetite at a time when the home market in China is losing steam.

Yet the rally raises a question that delivery tallies alone cannot answer: how much of that volume actually reaches shareholders as profit? For BYD, a higher vehicle count and a better bottom line are not interchangeable measures, and the gap between the two has become the central issue for anyone weighing the shares.

A quarter that beat last year but missed the market

The numbers for the third quarter of 2026, released on Thursday, capture that tension precisely. Net profit attributable to shareholders climbed 28.08% year on year to RMB10.02 billion. Revenue advanced 13.59% to RMB221.49 billion.

Strong as the quarter was, it fell short of expectations. Profit estimates compiled by Reuters ranged between 11.4 billion and 12.95 billion yuan, so a clear double-digit gain was not enough to clear the bar the market had set. That distinction matters: a company can grow operationally and still disappoint if investors have already priced in more.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The picture darkens over a longer horizon. Net profit for the first nine months of 2026 came in at RMB22.34 billion, down 4.24% from the prior-year period. A single strong quarter has therefore not yet offset the weaker run through the earlier part of the year, leaving a positive recent contribution sitting alongside a softer cumulative result.

Exports are the engine, but the profit test is what counts

The clearest operational support comes from overseas. October shipments abroad reached 170,194 vehicles, an increase of 102.8% — more than double the level of a year earlier. That surge is the heart of the bullish case: if BYD can convert this demand into additional earnings, international business could broaden the base for profit growth and turn sales momentum into something more durable than a one-day share price bump.

The quarter's revenue and profit growth fit that scenario in principle, showing that higher volumes and sales have recently come with a better result. What cannot be inferred from one quarter is that the improvement will persist.

Write-downs and a softer nine-month tally temper the story

Weighing on the other side are the charges BYD booked for the January-to-September 2026 period: RMB3.654 billion in credit and asset impairments, including RMB2.794 billion in inventory write-downs. These are already on the books and should not be read as a loss still to come, nor as an automatic signal of further write-downs ahead. They remain relevant nonetheless, because they show why a valuation built solely on vehicles sold would fall short.

The bearish case is straightforward. Deliveries stay strong but fail to satisfy profit expectations, and the recent share price move turns out to have front-run improvements BYD has yet to prove. Nor can the export boom alone be taken as evidence that weakness in the Chinese market has been permanently offset — that is an expectation, not a demonstrated trend.

What the next set of results must show

As long as sales and quarterly profit rise together, a continued recovery remains a plausible scenario. Should the earnings trend lose steam, the case for a lasting re-rating would weaken, and the October sales reaction would look like a foundation too thin to build on.

Further delivery reports will show whether the sales momentum holds. The more important test, though, lies in the next earnings figures: do they confirm the recent profit improvement, or does the stronger quarter stand without adequate follow-through? Today's share price move rewards growth. Whether it becomes something more depends on how reliably BYD turns that growth into profit.
