BYD's Record-Breaking Speedster Can't Outrun a Profit Miss and European Scrutiny

BYD's Q3 2026 net profit rose 28.08% to 10.02 billion RMB but missed broker estimates, as EU lawmakers seek a security review and YANGWANG sets a speed record.

BYD packed a lot into a single week: a quarterly earnings report that fell short of what brokers had penciled in, a fresh top-speed record for its YANGWANG sub-brand, and a push from European lawmakers to examine whether its cars pose a security risk. The common thread is a company expanding on multiple fronts while the questions around it multiply just as quickly.

The headline numbers for the third quarter of 2026, released on 29 October, show revenue climbing 13.59% year on year to 221.488 billion RMB. Net profit attributable to shareholders rose faster still, up 28.08% to 10.020 billion RMB. Strong as that looks in isolation, Reuters reported that the bottom line still came in below brokerage estimates.

Home-Market Headwinds Beneath the Growth

The profit shortfall sits against a difficult backdrop in China, where demand remains weak and price competition is fierce. October's delivery figures nonetheless extended a run of expansion: sales rose 11% year on year to 490,168 vehicles, the sixth consecutive month of growth. Overseas shipments did the heavy lifting, more than doubling with a 102.8% jump to 170,194 units — far outpacing the overall sales increase.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Switzerland offers a small but telling snapshot of that international push. BYD notched 835 new registrations there in October, good for a 4.4% share of the market and seventh place among all brands, according to company figures published on Tuesday. That slice of the market covers only the reporting month's registrations and says nothing about the broader sales trend.

Lawmakers Want Answers in Brussels

In Europe, the conversation has shifted from market share to data security. Fourteen members of the European Parliament have asked the European Commission to assess potential risks posed by BYD vehicles, and to weigh whether restrictions — including exclusion from public procurement tenders — would be justified. The request is for a review of possible measures, not a decision already taken.

BYD's response was categorical: data processed or stored in its vehicles or its cloud cannot be accessed remotely from China. The company has drawn that line before, and it will likely need to keep drawing it as the parliamentary pressure builds.

503.17 km/h, and a Sub-Brand to Match

Then there is the engineering flex. On Sunday in Abu Dhabi, the YANGWANG U9 Xtreme hit 503.17 kilometres per hour, a mark BYD is presenting as a new speed record for a production vehicle. It is the kind of number that generates headlines far beyond the automotive press — and a useful counterweight to a quarter in which the profit figure, not the top speed, is what analysts will be dissecting.
