The Chinese automaker is putting a humanoid robot on the sales floor in August, a move that pits it directly against Tesla's Optimus project. But the flashier announcement arrives alongside a more consequential shift: overseas deliveries have quietly become the engine keeping BYD's growth story intact.

BYD confirmed Tuesday that its first humanoid robot prototype will debut in its "Di Space" education and experience centers, which form part of the company's retail network. The project, developed by an in-house team within the 15th business division, follows a series of teasers in late July that highlighted interactive capabilities and the integration of automotive software with robotics hardware. Vice President Stella Li said the robots are ultimately intended to work as sales advisors and demonstration staff across BYD's dealer network.

The robotics push is one prong of a broader product offensive. Fang Cheng Bao, BYD's off-road brand, teased its upcoming Ti9 flagship SUV on Monday — a 5.3-meter model with integrated LiDAR sensors aimed at the premium family segment as a successor to the Ti7. In Japan, the company introduced the "Racco," a compact electric kei-car that logged roughly 100 orders in its first three days. A luxury sedan, the "Great Han," is also being positioned for the Chinese market with a 120-kWh battery and up to 800 kilometers of range under the domestic test cycle. In Australia, a "Driveaway" campaign running through September covers registration costs for the Sealion 7, an attempt to pressure established incumbents.

The timing coincides with a record month for deliveries. BYD sold 419,211 electrified vehicles in July, up 21.76 percent year over year and the strongest month of 2026 so far. The growth was almost entirely an export story: overseas shipments of passenger cars and pickups jumped 124.3 percent to roughly 180,000 units, with foreign deliveries accounting for 43 percent of monthly sales for the first time. Brazil proved a standout market, with 23,465 registrations in July — a 142.4 percent surge that secured fourth place in the overall market at a 9.1 percent share. French sales climbed 237.6 percent in a month when battery-electric vehicles reached a 35 percent market penetration there.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The domestic picture is less flattering. In China, BYD sold around 239,370 vehicles in July, a 9 percent decline attributed partly to changes in government subsidy policy since the start of the year. Cumulative new-energy vehicle sales over the first seven months reached 2,227,722 units, down 10.5 percent from the same period in 2025. The company has now delivered more than 17.3 million new-energy vehicles in total.

Premium brands are helping offset some of the margin pressure. Fang Cheng Bao sold 41,213 vehicles in July, up 190.6 percent, while Denza delivered 19,196 units, a 68.8 percent gain. Yangwang, the luxury marque, remains a niche at 485 vehicles but still grew 43.1 percent. That shift toward higher-priced segments comes amid a broader earnings squeeze: first-quarter net profit fell 55.4 percent to 4.08 billion yuan, weighed down by the ongoing price war in BYD's core domestic market. Industry-wide penetration of new-energy vehicles in China hit a record 65.7 percent, intensifying competitive pressure across the board. Rivals Xpeng, Nio and Li Auto all posted weaker or flat month-over-month numbers in July, while analysts reportedly maintain buy ratings on BYD versus neutral calls on some domestic competitors.

The stock has responded to the export momentum. Shares traded at 10.48 euros, up 1.77 percent on the day, with a weekly gain of 5.38 percent and a position just 0.64 percent below the 200-day average. The month-to-date advance stands at nearly 12 percent, though the price remains roughly 21 percent below the August 2025 high of 13.23 euros. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 64.1, suggesting building momentum without an overbought condition.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The arithmetic for the full year remains the stubborn constraint. To hit the lower end of the 5 to 5.5 million vehicle target, BYD needs average monthly sales of around 530,000 units over the remaining months — a figure well above July's record of roughly 420,000. Whether the robot showcase, the new model pipeline and the accelerating overseas push can close that gap is the question now hanging over the shares.
